Washington area prepares for biggest snowfall in six years (Greatest accumulation in 70 years)
The Washington Post ^ | Friday, December 18, 2009 | Michael E. Ruane and Hamil R. Harris

A major storm was expected to bury the Washington region Saturday with what forecasters said could be the largest snowfall to hit the area in six years and the greatest December accumulation in more than 70 years.

Accumulations of 15 inches or more in the city and up to 24 inches in parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains were possible, according to the National Weather Service. The snow was expected to cause significant disruptions for shoppers, travelers and revelers on the last weekend -- and biggest shopping day -- before Christmas.

Especially large amounts of snow could accumulate southeast of the Interstate 95 corridor, where "paralyzing" near-blizzard conditions could occur, said AccuWeather.com chief meteorologist Joe Bastardi.

Snow was expected to start falling early Saturday and to increase in intensity all day, as bands of precipitation, fed by moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and driven by a cold northeast wind, sweep over the area.

Temperatures will remain in the 20s and low 30s, aggravated by gusty winds of 20 to 25 mph, the Weather Service said. The snow was not expected to taper off until Sunday morning.

Severe highway, rail and air travel disruptions were anticipated. Some airlines were canceling flights Friday, and authorities urged people to stay off the roads. Southwest Airlines said it was allowing customers using six East Coast airports to rebook tickets without penalties.

A state of emergency was declared in Virginia, where the National Guard was on alert to help with emergency transportation. In the District, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) declared a snow emergency, effective at 7 a.m. Saturday. All vehicles must be removed from the city's snow routes or they will be ticketed and towed.

How many remember this from your childhood?

SNOW ICE CREAM RECIPES

These are basic, but you can use your imagination for various flavors. (Use chocolate milk, or use eggnog and rum flavoring, etc.) It’s fun, and it’s good! : )

Once enough snow has fallen for there to be clean snow.

#1——
Ingredients
1 gallon snow
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups evaporated milk

Directions
Place a large, clean bowl outside to collect the flakes. When full, stir in sugar and vanilla to taste, then stir in just enough milk for the desired consistency. Serve at once.

#2——
Ingredients
8 cups snow
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
Place snow into a large bowl. Pour condensed milk over and add vanilla. Mix to combine. Serve immediately in bowls.

Yep - remember snow cream well.

Some loved it - but me, never a fan of it. Too sweet!

But we made it after every measurable snow anyway!

Abd we played outside in the snow, usually sledding, til our lips and hands and feet turned blue!

I hate to tell you this, but we usually start laughing ;).

The good thing about snow ice cream is that you can adjust the ingredients to taste! : ) My daddy always wanted it sweet. I’m like you in that regard. I don’t like it quite so sweet...always added a little more snow to mine!

Yes, I remember how my fingers and toes burned and ached when they were “thawing out”. But, it didn’t stop me from going right back for more of it!

Even God has a sense of humor. This Global Warming (or whatever “they” are calling it now) is suppose to continue in Mexico in July. This is more about how to take money away from the good citizens of the USA than it is about the weather! Like you-—I don’t want to see this Health Care plan pass. If it’s not good enough for ALL Americans(meaning those in Congress, Senate, the Pres. and family); then it needs to be voted down!

But I’m a father now and I am doing the same for my children without any expectations of “payback” other than do better in live than I have.

I’m truly sorry... I thought you knew I was kidding...

“Payback guilt” is wrong...what a person gives SHOULD be a gift of love, pure & simple...

My Mom made all of her grandkids a quilt. She gave them with conditions attached...and I don’t think a single one of the kids uses theirs, even though her conditions have been met. Truly sad for all involved...

Again... I’m sorry...

The Sentinel’s Creed

My dedication to this sacred duty
Is total and wholehearted-
In the responsibility bestowed on me
Never will I falter-
And with dignity and perseverance
My standard will remain perfection.
Through the years of diligence and praise
And the discomfort of the elements
I will walk my tour in humble reverence
The best of my ability.
It is he who commands the respect I protect
His bravery that made us so proud.
Surrounded by well meaning crowds by day,
Alone in the thoughtful peace of night,
This soldier in honored Glory rest
Under my eternal vigilance.

God Bless These Men Who Will Walk Their Post In The Cold,,,

Please Keep Them Warm...

After I moved to California, I learned that when they expected a big rain storm (”it never rains in southern California. It pours; man, it pours”), they would empty the shelves of dried split peas to make soup. Seemed to make sense.

Just curious..... is the Senate in session right now, at 2:45 am ET? Or has the snowstorm effectively shut down any gathering of the Senate. I especially hope that any weenie demoRAT senators are too scared to go out into the cold & snow!!!
