Washington area prepares for biggest snowfall in six years (Greatest accumulation in 70 years)
The Washington Post ^ | Friday, December 18, 2009 | Michael E. Ruane and Hamil R. Harris

A major storm was expected to bury the Washington region Saturday with what forecasters said could be the largest snowfall to hit the area in six years and the greatest December accumulation in more than 70 years.

Accumulations of 15 inches or more in the city and up to 24 inches in parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains were possible, according to the National Weather Service. The snow was expected to cause significant disruptions for shoppers, travelers and revelers on the last weekend -- and biggest shopping day -- before Christmas.

Especially large amounts of snow could accumulate southeast of the Interstate 95 corridor, where "paralyzing" near-blizzard conditions could occur, said AccuWeather.com chief meteorologist Joe Bastardi.

Snow was expected to start falling early Saturday and to increase in intensity all day, as bands of precipitation, fed by moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and driven by a cold northeast wind, sweep over the area.

Temperatures will remain in the 20s and low 30s, aggravated by gusty winds of 20 to 25 mph, the Weather Service said. The snow was not expected to taper off until Sunday morning.

Severe highway, rail and air travel disruptions were anticipated. Some airlines were canceling flights Friday, and authorities urged people to stay off the roads. Southwest Airlines said it was allowing customers using six East Coast airports to rebook tickets without penalties.

A state of emergency was declared in Virginia, where the National Guard was on alert to help with emergency transportation. In the District, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) declared a snow emergency, effective at 7 a.m. Saturday. All vehicles must be removed from the city's snow routes or they will be ticketed and towed.

LOL! We don’t have enough snow in Williamsburg and it’s going to turn to rain tomorrow. But this was ideal for my cabin PLUS I’m letting my parents move into the cabin (rent free) so this was the last weekend I could enjoy it with snow without someone else being there.

Yeah, I’m a bit selfish, but I think I deserve it. Most people would just turn their parents over to medicare but I have them a 1700 sq foot cabin to live in. So I’m allowed this one ticked off moment.

I fondly or at times not so affectionately remember living around Lake Tahoe back around 1990, I first lived at Incline Village and found I had to commute to South Shore and at the time I was driving a 1974 Chevy 3/4 ton 2wd Pu and even when there was literally a chain across the highway heading there I would drop it and proceed with my snow chains on. one night I was out having a few drinks and I decided to go see my future wife who lived down the hill in Carson City so I literally flew down Spooner Summit in near white out conditions drunk off my ass, to this day I still don’t know how I did that.

And then there was two years of working on the Tahoe Queen as chief engineer and having to do that in the winter of clearing the dock of snow, of dealing with the long ski tour trips to north shore when the lake had 8 foot waves, of also yet another job working as a snowcat mechanic at Heavenly at the upper elevation shop and during times of heavy snow having to travel by snowmacine down the mountain when the tram was shut down.

I kinda miss Tahoe but then I remember the cost of living there, even by Alaska standards it was outrageous, especially housing. Worst was the TRPA that would not let you even paint your house anything but a surrounding area color. And I remember watching chopper bikers from probably Sacramento or thereabouts riding through the snow slush in parade style heading for the casinos in the summer when a surprise snow dump occurred.

I'm basically in the extended Eastern Sierra range next to Lake Tahoe.

For those of you Freepers who are championship skiiers and want conditions like you can only find in the Swiss Alps and the Rockies, get on a plane to Reno soon as you can. It's shaping up to be a snowy winter like few can remember in recent history.

You got it! Carson City last Friday...

Shivering for you all!!

It’s expected to be in the high 70s tomorrow here... Kick me now. But I’d rather have snow piled up to my neck and a JOB.

Maybe Joe will be snowed in for a few days.

He might not get snowed in up there, but he won't be coming back here.

Three cases of different beers. Yuengling, Guinness, and Mick Ultra for my roommate. Plus plenty of rum, vodka, burbon, and wine. Should be good for a few hours! :)

Are you due for a lot of snow? I looked at your weather map but other than cold, it didn’t tell a lot. Guess you are missing the really bad stuff.

NWS now has a blizzard warning for the Annapolis area of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding counties. Great. I am so not shoveling until Monday.

Ooohh yeah... For Thanksgiving, my wife and I drove 395 south to San Bernardino and back on Saturday right when that big storm hit SoCal and the Eastern Sierra.

It was stormy driving up past China Lake NAS with 85 mph winds, then the sun went down right about the time we passed through Bishop. I drove through your backyard in that blizzard and I don't think my cheeks unclenched until I crossed the state line and back down the mountain into Gardnerville. I think we went 150 miles through the snow and didn't see but maybe five cars coming our way after Mammoth Lakes. Two of those were CHP.

When you're worried about how screwed you'd be if you lost a tire or slipped off the roadway, all you can do is keep plowing ahead spitting sunflower seed shells into a cup and making sure the wife keeps you awake with Thermos coffee.

You’re gonna have to get out your snowshoes and ski-poles if you run out of beer, heh.

They’re trying to panic us - “historic”, “record-breaking”, but I was just looking at the Accuweather SE regional animated map, and there’s no way this is going to continue all day tomorrow. I’d be surprised if we still had snow at 9:00 am. I’m going for 6-8” here in western Fairfax County.

$5 says you get more than a foot.

Oik! Ya think THEY enjoyed getting up overnite for all those feedings?

Changing your diapers?

Wiping your nose?

Taking you to school?

Helping you with your homework?

(is this working yet?)

Helping you turn into a responsible adult?

(I’m running out of Mother’s Guilt here)
