CALIFORNIA: State and local growth slows to a trickle
Sacramento Bee ^ | 12/18/9 | Phillip Reese

Shedding jobs that once reliably attracted new residents, California grew at a slower pace this year than all but two other years since 1900, according to state Department of Finance figures released Thursday.

The number of new births dropped. The number of new immigrants dropped. And more residents left California for other states than came here.

The end result: Statewide growth from July 2008 to July 2009 was 350,000 people, or less than 1 percent. During the rest of the decade, California averaged 525,000 new residents each year.

The four-county Sacramento region posted even more striking numbers, adding just 21,000 people, a growth rate of 1.1 percent and half the 42,000 average during the rest of the decade.

The calculus is simple. "What attracts people here is jobs," said Dennis Meyers, principal economist for the Department of Finance. "When the jobs slow down, the population growth slows to a trickle."

California saw a net loss of 800,000 jobs from July 2008 to July 2009, according to the California Department of Labor.

Another interesting dimension is the aging of the north state. By 2020, a large sector of the population will be 60 or older. These are the folks that don’t need family wage full time jobs. Unfortunately, seniors demand far more in services than they pay taxes for. It will be a further drain on the state.

It is quite common for people to steal UHauls so they dont have to wait in line for a couple more weeks.

funny you should say that, California’s population has grown every year in the last decade, however there are approximately 1.5 million less CITIZENS or LEGAL RESIDENTS or TAXPAYERS. Virtually all of the growth in the last 10 years is due to Illegal Immigration and Anchor Babies. Taxpayers have been leaving.

Humboldt’s unemployment rate at the end of Nov is about 11.5%. 20 years ago Eureka High graduated over 700 students and this past June it was less then 350. I know your county is worse...

I guess it does if they are applying for unemployment benefits but most of them work in the pot fields which is a... GROWTH INDUSTRY. OK I couldn’t the resist the pun. There must be at least 8 Growers Supply warehouses in Humboldt. I think there are 4 in Eureka alone

Both of those charts indicate a pretty obvious decline. Only in a liberal mind does a decline equal a slowing of growth.

LOL---no kidding, that is a brilliant insight into those warped liberal minds.

Only in a liberal mind does a decline equal a slowing of growth....

Would make a good tagline.

We hit 10.4% in November. Of course, the records don’t show the Jimmy Carter unemployement rate.

There are many 62 and older citizens, who have given up trying to get jobs and went on early SS. This will be a major problem in a few years. These people are no longer contributing to SS and are collecting the benefits years before they had intended.
