I have to admit, the
National Anthem of the Soviet Union is a catchy tune.
If the factual history of Communism were not torture, oppression, starvation, imprisonment, brutality, poverty, corruption, and rape - you could almost sing the lyrics with pride.

I have always been conflicted...I hate to admit that I like the music...it is a little more damning than admitting that you might like the Bee Gees or Karen Carpenter, but I can see how the Soviet citizens would find it a stirring tune.
Of course, as you said..."If the factual history of Communism were not torture, oppression, starvation, imprisonment, brutality, poverty, corruption, and rape..."

"Yes, Pilot, the "Internationale" is a beautiful, powerful piece of music, especially when sung by a full chorus. I catch myself humming along when I hear it sometimes.
As I get older and look back, it seems like the devil has his own music ministry. Not trying to be funny, just sayin'.

Huh?
Surely this has been misidentified, and it's actually the WELCOME OBAMA crowd, awaiting his arrival in 'Hopenhagen' today?

They’re wearing winter coats.

I'm almost certain that the Soviet National Anthem and the Internationale are two different songs. These Copenhagen jerks with their hammer-and-sickle flags are caught in a time warp, apparently not realizing that the Soviet regime has been (at least officially) history since 1991.
Plus, their calls to "stop global warming" are inane. Even if global warming were a scientific fact, which is not the case, there is nothing that man could possibly do to "stop" it. And the Soviet Union that they so admire was among the biggest polluters in the world, and never made any effort to reduce their carbon emissions.

The Russian gov’t was dead set against any action at Copenhagen. Seems like a good time to make sure our eastern European allies get those missiles.

I'm almost certain that the Soviet National Anthem and the Internationale are two different songs. These You're absolutely right.
I didn't know that until I googled the "Internationale", and found out it was a 19th Century French Communist song. The Soviet Union felt ethnic Russians wanted an anthem that motivated its own troops and people better, hence the Soviet anthem. The original lyrics contained tributes to Stalin, but were removed later. After the purge of Stalin, they later removed all lyrics altogether and the anthem was played for awhile with just music and no singing. (source: Wikipedia)
The anthem has had a surge in popularity in Russia in recent years. Like I said, I think it is a very good song. Better tune than our national anthem.
