The Palin Wonder – by Jamie Glazov

Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Victor Davis Hanson, a classicist and historian at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.

FP: Victor Hanson, welcome to Frontpage Interview.

Hanson: Glad to be here again.

FP: Sarah Palin is, clearly, carving out a national presence right now. It’s not just the appeal of her book, but also her outspokenness on the Copenhagen conference and other issues. What do you think she might be up to? And what is she tapping into? What are her possibilities?

Hanson: I think she taps into a current of populist unhappiness in the country with Washington insiders, Big Money, and condescending elites in the media and popular culture. The Wasilla mom of five, married to the snow-mobile champ, is simply the antithesis of all that. She senses the general disgust with an insider class that has nearly bankrupted the country through insane federal spending and equally insane financial speculation. She resonates in this regard mostly through an authentic middle-class upbringing, the real-world living of Alaska, natural intelligence, spunk and drive that sent one from the Wasilla city-council to the governorship of Alaska—and common sense answers like less government, lower taxes, more self-reliance, and national confidence.

Her can-do “let’s develop our own energy and spend no more than we earn” creed has a reassurance in these days. People root for her. The Ivy-Leaguers in government, whether the lawyer Obama or the economist Summers, haven’t exactly wowed the public with their studied brilliance so far.

"Palin needs to do something similiar. She needs face time in the media, not hide out in Facebook."

She doesn't need to over do it either. I think she's doing real good. Hey, she can strategically place an op-ed at will and get her point across and she gets media coverage with it.

>>>Palin should try to be a Fox News Contributor. This way, Palin could talk about the issues on all the Fox News shows like Greta, Hannity, O’Reilly, and Fox & Friends in the same manner as Newt, Huckabee, and John Bolton.<<<

I appreciate your ardor for Sarah, but that’s really old school thinking. A whole herd of leftists have done the same sort of thing on their own networks.

If I were Sarah, I’d start preparing policy statements and posting them as podcasts for viral distribution to anyone who wanted to listen to them. I’d create DVDs showcasing people across the United States acting in positive ways that highlight Palin’s way of thinking, and then allow them to be downloaded over the Internet. I’d create sound-bite commercials that did nothing more than express love and admiration for the American experiment and its successes. I’d constantly tweak the leftist royalty for their elite pretense on Twitter and Facebook. I’d show up every once in while with Stewart and Leno and O’Brien. I’d get tickets to the Letterman show, then walk on stage and steal the show with some clever rejoinders and an ironic aside about forgiveness. Ask Americans for their ideas about how to grow and prosper, and then make those with the best ideas heroes for their 15 minutes of fame. And always, always, always puncture the self-importance of the mainstream media with gentle facts which lance the boil with surgical precision.

Hell, I’d work for her, for free, in a cold minute. Which we have a lot of up here next to the Arctic Circle.

Too much like Newt Gingrich is doing, except for the free part.

Great thoughts. I agree on your concept. Maybe even videos on her facebook page or website (when she starts it) for policy statements to supplement your podcast idea...all sort of a modern equivalent to Reagan’s radio broadcasts.

Twitter and Facebook are limited in reaching people.

Palin does best when she’s seen in the flesh and not hiding behind radio or Facebook. Remember, her polls tanked when she hid behind Facebook and “disappeared” in August, Sept, and Oct. With her book tour and being visible, Palin’s poll numbers have improved, but still short of being north of 50% approval.

Huckabee is unfazed by his clemencies, because he appeared on all the news shows, Jon Stewart, and the View to make his case. Despite the GOP establishment going after him, people are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Huckabee is doing something right. Thus Huckabee is doing the things that Palin should be doing.
