WASHINGTON -- A new study found that people who report more satisfaction with their lives live in states that score well on things like good schools, low crime and short commuting time, perhaps a first objective look at why some states are happier than others.
The state-by-state list, from happiest to least cheery:

I left all the crazy Illinois ways back there.
My son was looking at post-grad schools over the summer and ranked them by happiest people and here is his order for four states:
Tennessee (4)
Texas (15)
Pennsylvania (41)
Indiana (48)

When we left, I felt like I was 50 pounds lighter.
I love it here in northern ‘bama. People are great, food is great, weather is great, politics is MUCH better( although how could it be any worse than Illinois?) 2 great republican senators and a good governor- what’s not to like?
Flee Illinois as soon as you are able!

It may be a Dem hellhole but New Orleans is sure worth preserving to me.
Well being is more akin to healthy lifestyle than happiness index.
All southern states with huge very obese black (the women mostly) populations and fair amount of fat white trash (again women mostly)are doomed for that from the start..
Same demographic that causes them to lose at income and school score ranks too
But even the lower classes down here are happier than up north.
I noticed that right away living in Manhattan...the legions of poor blacks and latinos there were angry...much different than what I was used to...or maybe they just didn’t like me...I get that sometimes.
My possible future son in law from Cornwall NY just got here and that was his first comment after “it’s colder than I thought” was how much nicer folks are here...he is simply floored.
I warned him though that being abrasive down here can spark trouble that among whites will get violent quicker than outside the south expecially with hillbillies....so don’t equate politeness with weakness. Even if you take out black crime, whites down south are still more prone to shoot or staub folks they are in a row with.
GO Arizona!! I can tell you with absolute certainty. I am happy here. The summers are a sarcastic sick joke but the rest of the year is sent by the lord to make up for it.
People in a Manhattan bar are far more interesting and fun to talk to than Hillbillies in a similar setting, especially if you are not interested in discussing football or basketball.

Elbow room is tough to find as it is.
