Breaking: Nelson rejects abortion compromise
HotAir ^ | 12/17/2009 | Ed Morrisey

The path to 60 just got a lot more difficult:

In an interview Thursday with a Nebraska radio station, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) said new compromise language on abortion funding is unacceptable. “As it is right now, without further modifications, it isn’t sufficient,” Nelson told KLIN radio in Lincoln, NE.

This could be a significant blow to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s effort to line up 60 votes in the coming days for the health care bill. Nelson has said he would filibuster the bill unless the abortion language mirrored what was included in the House bill.

Even if abortion is addressed to his satisfaction, “that is not enough” for Nelson commit to voting for the bill, he said.

How bad will this get? Barack Obama hasn’t even addressed the issue of abortion with Nelson directly. That’s a pretty interesting picture of disinterest coming from the Oval Office on what is supposed to be Obama’s highest priority on his domestic agenda.

Harry Reid will have to go back to the drawing board on abortion funding, but that may not be possible. His progressive wing is already in near revolt over having to vote for a bill with no government-run plan in it. They wanted a precursor to a single-payer system; in fact, that was the entire point of the health-care reform push. Now they’re going to be asked to kill funding for abortion as well, having worked for months to build a path around the Hyde Amendment. There is no way that will get through to cloture, and no way it will pass in the House even if it did.

Nelson’s driving a stake through the heart of ObamaCare. Looks like Barack Obama has his pretext for skipping Copenhagen.

these stupid people are arguing over abortion. It is a procedure that is affordable for everyone.

Yes, that is a great point. It also shows just how hoodwinked the entire society has become with so-called "health insurance" in the first place.

Insurance according to Webster's: coverage by contract in which one party agrees to indemnify or reimburse another for loss that occurs under the terms of the contract.

How is the addition of a human baby into a mother's womb a "loss"? What is she losing? Seems to me that if she does have an abortion... THEN, there is a "loss".

But another issue in my mind is what we've done to the term "insurance" - it should be for causes that would devastate a person or family, to remedy catastrophic circumstances. Its not for everyday hangnail and headache. By making it so, it changes the discourse, and helps frame the debate to what we see today.

They weren’t trying to ramrod anything like this nightmare down our throats.

Bush also made the mistake of trying to work with the Rats for the good of the country. The Rats are more interested in absolute power than whats good for the country.

The democrats' progressive wing must be smoking some kind of illegal substance. A single-payer system, code words for a complete government takeover, would be a disaster for America. In the long run a government takeover would seriously degrade the quality of American health care and do major damage to our people. Quality is very important in health care because (unlike auto care) we can't just go to another hospital to redo a botched procedure or operation. The patient may be dead or badly damaged by that point. Why would quality be degraded in the long run? It would seriously decline in the long run because if health care is run by the government and becomes almost free for most people, then demand for medical procedures and prescription drugs would soar and the cost of the program would explode way beyond all forecasts. Congress would then take the path of least resistance politically and cut compensation for medical professionals and owners of health care facilities, which would drive many talented physicians and nurses out of the health care field or into early retirement, while also degrading the quality of medical facilities. This is exactly what has already happened in Canada and Britain. I remember talking to a young lady at an apartment complex whose family had left Canada to move to the US because of government-imposed limits on pay for doctors in Canada.

There is no perfect health care system as long as people remain imperfect. The best system is a system based on the free market that allows all individuals to make their own free decisions about what kind of health insurance coverage they want and what they're willing to pay for it. Government intervention in the free markets always leads to price distortions and restriction of free decisions and prevents the people from getting the health care they need at a price they're willing to pay.

Telling a Democrat you are closing a Military base is akin to offering Heroin to a jonesing addict.

Pull up a chair and pass the popcorn.

Don't get too worked up over the theatrics.

Weeks ago Obama essentially said his bill would pass with the prerequisite 51 votes on a reconciliation vote if need be.

This bill will include abortion as health care and a public option.

IMHO anyway.

“the final bill we’ll vote on isn’t even the one we’ve had on the floor....”

So, Senator McConnell...if that’s the case, why would the GOP delegation even SHOW UP to “vote” on the dam* thing??!!

One other thing to remember about the push to take abortion out of the bill. If they do this and Nelson agrees to then vote for the bill you are still getting a takeover of healthcare that will destroy the country and the democrats will simply bring it back in through the back door once they have control of healthcare. This is not about abortion as a single issue, this is about the economic survival of the country and oppression of the citizenry. No bill means no oppression and along with that no expansion of fully funded abortion services. Don’t lock in on single issues, the democrat party uses them as distractions to eventually get their way.

Nebraska however is an important military state. Nelson would never get reelected if he allowed the government to blackmail him in this manner.

I just noticed that there was a 3.5 earthquake in Nebraska. Senator Nelson is from Nebraska.

There are some people who believe that earthquakes can be man-caused using electromagnetic waves....just sayin’.

Earthquakes are natural phenomena that occur from time to time. There were even earthquakes when the dinosaurs ruled the Earth and long before man appeared so that story does not hold water at all.

>> “That’s a shame, Sen. Nelson, you had a real purdy airbase there.” <<

Yeah, it would be a reeeaaaal shame if somethin’ happened to the funding of it.....

If I were Ben Nelson I would have tape recorder next to me at all times or maybe a MP3 payer that can record and just wait for someone in the Obama admin to call and threaten and then use it as leverage or when Obama’s popularity is sliding down, use it as a final nail in Narcissistic Nosferatu’s Coffin.

Of course what remains to be seen is if any amount of silver coinage will buy Nelson’s loyalty to the current Administration????

Oh you are so wrong. Democrats are all Marxists/liberals and so they all lie.

I bet government run healthcare with the public option will pass. Therefore government will be able to steal money from the productive private sector to fund abortions as they are doing now with medicaid and public clinics.

Lets see if you can take it back and say the truth that Nelson is a terrorist WHEN it does pass, ok?

You know very little about Marxism/Democrats.

Willing to bet and show up here when Democrats pass this government healthcare?

They are just waiting for Rush and the alternative media to take Christmas vacation.

I hope I'm wrong but i doubt it.

The one thing all Democrats seem to have in common is their belief that government is the answer to every problem.

Yes, that's very true , because all democrats are Maxists/liberals/socialists.

I think the idea to blame the presence of man for naturally occurring phenomena is just plain silly. Certainly I agree about pollution but that can be controlled internally without government intervention or intrusion especially when it seeks to impose draconian rules and regulations that no business or country could ever afford. There are better ways to stimulate that kind of action like tax breaks and other kinds of business incentives for complying with rules for cleaner air and cleaner water.

The OP(formerly the GOP) should create one amendment after another each consisting of several hundred pages and have all of them read by the clerk.

They can’t. The feminists raised holy hell after the Stupak amendment, and a significant number of feminists in Congress said they will not vote for a bill without abortion funding, while a significant number of pro-life Democrats said they would not vote for a bill with abortion funding.

Exactly.

This Bill was never going to get past the House on the final vote.
