The Washington City Council voted Tuesday to legalize same-sex marriage in the nation's capital.

The bill will be given to Mayor Adrian Fenty, who has expressed his support and vowed to sign the bill.

If the mayor signs it, Congress will have 30 days to intervene before it would take effect. It is considered unlikely that the Democratic majority on Capitol Hill will block the bill

Tuesday's second vote was needed to send the measure to Fenty. The council passed the bill in an 11-2 vote December 1.

If the measure becomes law, Washington will join Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Iowa in allowing legal same-sex marriages. A law legalizing gay marriage in New Hampshire takes affect January 1....

This was done over the will of the people. Let's hope the challenge by the Alliance Defense Fund lets the people vote on this issue.

I have never heard of a city charter that gave that kind of power to a city government.

Gives new meaning to the Washington Monument, which will become a popular backdrop (or sidedrop) for some wedding photos.

Washington, DC is unique. It’s not part of any state; the land is a federal territory (IIRC), but enjoys a limited “home rule”. The City Council and Mayor are more like a legislature and a governor in the sort of things over which they have authority. OTOH, the Congress enjoys a veto power, since Washington DC is their creature.

Black politicians are. I’m not so sure about the general population. Otherwise, the politicians wouldn’t be so concerned about letting them vote on the issue. The DC Board of Elections rejected a petition for a referendum, on the grounds that it violates the District’s “human rights” law, and that’s why there’s a lawsuit on.

This provides even more evidence for Islamic fundamentalists to consider Washington, D.C. controlled by “the Great Satan”.

Any country which prides itself on being a Christian nation should never tolerate such an abomination of our core American family values.

Even Marion Barry, not exactly a reputable person, stood up for people of faith and voted AGAINST this gay marriage bill.

Gays have the exact same marriage rights as anyone else under traditional marriage: they can marry any member of the opposite sex who is of age, isn’t already married, and consents to the marriage.

Oh, it was some apologist for the decision who was saying, in so many words, that the people spoke through their elected officials, and that minority rights should be voted on.

It was just the usual “you can’t deprive gays of the same marriage rights you give yourselves!” bile. Last I checked, nobody was trying to keep gay individuals from marrying people of the opposite sex.
