Stalag Luft XIX: Spend a week in a newly-constructed Luftwaffe POW facility in Poland.
POW Escapes ^ | December 15, 2009 | POW Escapes

Posted on 12/15/2009 12:22:40 PM PST by shoptalk

During World War II, the Germans would throw you into a POW camp free of charge. Today, POW Escapes will sell you the experience of spending a week in a newly-constructed Luftwaffe prisoner of war facility for just $3,500. For a short time, you will feel what it was like for airmen captured and held captive by the Lufwaffe during the war.

$3,500 buys you a sightseeing tour of the Jewish Ghetto and Nazi installations, a week in the camp, your meals, a POW camp uniform, recreated documents and a “liberation dinner” at the end of your stay where your "performance" will be graded (and where you might be branded a collaborator if you fail to remain in-character or you betray your mates.)

From the website: “At some point during your intelligence gathering (the tour), an informer will tip off the Germans and you will be arrested by the Gestapo as a spy and forced to change into uniform. You will then be taken away for interrogation and your Polish helpers will be "shot". Following your interrogation, you will be taken to Stalag Luft XIX where you will be held captive.”

"POW Escapes offers you the unique opportunity to travel back through time to World War Two for a totally authentic war-time experience."

"Please note that this experience is only available for men - unfortunately we cannot accommodate women for obvious reasons."

"At no time will you be allowed to break character, and at no time will any of our staff break character.... We dedicate this site to those brave captured men and we hope that this experience will help others appreciate something of what those men went through after they were captured while fighting for our freedom."

Airfare to Warsaw is not included.

I can’t freakin’ believe this. My grandfather, who was a POW in Nazi Germany, would be rolling in his grave. His experiences as a POW were unpleasant, to say the least.

This sounds like a real HOOT! If I had the spare cash, this would be my idea of a great holiday. But then again, I already live in a South Pacific paradise -- the sort of place people like to vacation at. A WW-II POW camp for a week "just for fun" sounds like a fantastic change of pace, and a nifty opportunity to step back thru time and experience History.

High on my bucket-list! That and the Nijmegen march.

For an extra charge, you can be mauled by a pair of vicious German shepherd dogs, for the amusement of your guards.

(Medical costs not included. You must fully indemnify us against the possibility of your being permanently injured. Other conditions may apply.) /s

Acknowledged, and with no Disrespect intended to his memory. Not all vacations need to be fun and relaxing, tho', in order to be worthwhile. The Lough Derg Pilgrimage wouldn't be for everyone, and most people wouldn't enjoy it. Same with visiting Killing Fields of Cambodia, or doing the Nijmegen March.

I wouldn't mind doing any of these, just once — because they provide a really different slice of life, and at the end you get to return alive and you get bragging rights. Much more interesting pub talk than "my vacation at Disneyland".

The POW Camp vacation would be lots of fun for anyone brought up idolizing The Greatest Generation. I don't mean "fun" as in FUN, but "fun" in that you get to step back thru time and live life as it was lived in their boots. Who wouldn't want to do that?? I'm good for that, anytime.

I might draw the line at the Kidnap Vacation, even tho' it sounds like a riot. To do that properly it would be necessary to run the risk of not coming out alive, and for that risk to be real. An acceptable risk if not dealing with bozos, and I'm not convinced from what I read in the article that Bozo isn't running that outfit. And, too, it sounds kinky — which makes me wonder how realistic it could be. And besides, you can get kidnapped for free by vacationing in Mexico.

This is downright creepy.

Coming next.. the Bataan Death March Experience?

Or... Auschwitz for a Week (we use Febreze rather than Zyklon-B for your safety)

Would rather spend the cash at Gunsite learning how to be a better Pistol shot.
But if they are looking for guards, I have a German Uniform.

Thank you posting the reminder of the Killing Fields in Cambodia. We need to remind ourselves of that every once in awhile.

Sure, guns are fun and it's useful and relaxing to be able to shoot. But after a while there's only so many different ways to make a firearm go "bang" and so many different holes you can put into a target at so many different distances.

But actually doing something different, exciting and meaningful — like walking the Bataan Death March or visiting ANZAC Cove at Gallipoli — you don't do that sort of thing for "kicks" but they are excellent things to do on vacation nonetheless. Not all vacations need to be relaxing and happy. Sometimes it is good to do things that are sobering and unusual.

Like the others that I've listed up-thread, I would gladly do these two vacations in a heartbeat.

Ping to #18. To that list I'd add D-Day Tours. Sure, it's not for everybody, but it would be the vacation of a lifetime.

I would sign up for that in an instant: it would be unforgettable, the sort of thing you could tell your grandchildren.

Beats YET ANOTHER vacation in Vegas all hollow.
