Gang Violence Grows on an Indian Reservation
New York Times ^ | December 13, 2009 | ERIK ECKHOLM

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — Richard Wilson has been a pallbearer for at least five of his “homeboys” in the North Side Tre Tre Gangster Crips, a Sioux imitation of a notorious Denver gang.

One 15-year-old member was mauled by rivals. A 17-year-old shot himself; another, on a cocaine binge and firing wildly, was shot by the police. One died in a drunken car wreck, and another, a founder of the gang named Gaylord, was stabbed to death at 27.

“We all got drunk after Gaylord’s burial, and I started rapping,” said Mr. Wilson, who, at 24, is practically a gang elder. “But I teared up and couldn’t finish.”

If you want to see what happens when the government takes care of you, go to an Indian Reservation preferably a tribe without casinos.

Pine Ridge has been a toilet full of violence for the last 30 to 40 or more years. But Don't worry, Obama is going to make it into a paradise.

With this sort of poverty, booze and drugs etc. and the mental attitude of the young, you can see how AIM came in there years ago and recruited them behind the banner of “it’s all the white man’s fault” and they took over Wounded Knee. Agents were killed and Indian youths were killed and years later, nothing has really changed.

We visited the Wounded Knee burial site a few years back. Expected to see a monument or memorial, but it was very run down. There was a pan handler hanging around the site. Talked with some wonderful ladies across the way who were selling souvenirs. They were very proud of their heritage, but talked of the sad state of affairs on the reservation today. The living conditions we saw there were far worse than anything we had seen in the Chicago ghetto.

The Oglala Sioux will never change. I remember Wounded Knee back then - Means and Banks bankrolled by their rich liberal Minneapolis money....

As long as that tribe stays in the bottle and lives on Fed money and housing, they are doomed. Pride doesn’t exist with them, and never will.

Seemed like the flood was bad enough back then, and then AIM decides that they want to “take the Black Hills back” from whitey. (Forgetting that the Hills were sacred ground and not to be entered without religious reasons.)

Urban-rapping Native American gangstas.

You can’t make this stuff up because nobody would believe you.

My uncle lives in New Mexico and talked about the reservation near him. He said the government came in and built houses years ago and the people would put the animals in the houses and live in teepees. He said he remembers going by a house and some men field dressing a deer in the living room.

I worked with a guy who field dressed a deer in his dorm room at school.

If you ever want to see true poverty, go to Pine Ridge or Rosebud. It is other-worldly. The Bros from Da Hood think they got it rough. They wouldn’t last a New York minute on “Da Rez.”

Forgetting that the Hills were sacred ground and not to be entered without religious reasons.

And also apparently forgetting that the "Paha Sapa," (the Black Hills) originally belonged to the Cheyenne and Crow. Until the Lakotah pushed them out.

Aim showed up on the Hoopa res and caused problems. I remember going to our place on the Klamath and finding the hiway blocked in Hoopa and fishermen’s cars getting busted into but not all of those were Indians as the Haight-Ashbury crowd was setting up along the rivers and Meth soon followed. For a time I wore my pistol on my hip and one on my ankle when I fished...

The indians scream and beat their breast over any desecration of their sites by the white man, but when it comes to preserving their own history they are out to lunch. When it comes to preserving any white man's artifacts on their land, see my experiences at Fort McDowell, AZ.

another example of the billions of taxpayer dollars poured into a meaningless hole. Where does the money go? Where did all the billions in educational grants go? and why do tribes allowed casinos, get to throw out tribal members so they can reduce the share-pile? and why don’t casino-tribes share charitably with their non-casino tribes? Some tribes in California are filthy rich and getting richer with the new 99-year permits for casinos they weren’t supposed to get with no strings.

I’m soooooo over white-guilt.

Il Rep. Bobby Rush was a member of the Blackstone Nation gang in his youth. If there were greater numbers of Indians living in urban areas, “community organizers” like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have swarmed in and made them into a political force (and grown rich in the process). Since they are few in number, living in rural areas, they have not followed the same path as other minorities. Rural whites and Native Americans, I believe, live in far worse poverty than Blacks in the cities. They are fewer in number and too spread out to “organize”—no money to be made there by the community organizers.

And on top of that they had Dick Wilson, Tribal Chairman, a real crook and his goon squad being backed by the US Government and they were as bad or even worse than the Aim guys.
