Copenhagen climate conference: Ocean acidification could leave one billion people hungry (Huh?)
The Telegraph ^ | 11/14/2009 | Louise Gray

Posted on 12/14/2009 11:21:06 AM PST by markomalley

As the world struggles to reach an agreement on global warming, the UK Environment Secretary said pollution is having a particularly damaging effect on the two thirds of the world covered by oceans.

He explained that carbon dioxide is being absorbed at a faster rate than at any time in the previous 21 million years, causing ocean acidification.

The process dissolves the shells and skeletons of key marine life and is in danger of destroying whole ecosystems.

“Why should we worry about this?” he asked “Because there is marine life that is affected by that change. In particular animals and plants that have a calcium carbonate skeleton and that other marine life feed on. When you think that one billion people depend on fish as their principle source of protein this is something we should worry about.”

Mr Benn’s comments follow a UN report that warned ocean acidification is an “underwater time bomb”, which cannot be reversed in less than tens of thousands of years. It is predicted 70 per cent of cold water corals could be exposed to corrosive water by 2100.

The report was released at the Copenhagen climate summit in order to put pressure on world leaders to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being released by cars and factories as part of a new deal on global warming.

I wish they'd get it straight. I thought CO2 formed a greenhouse layer that kept heat in, thus causing global warming. Now I hear that it is absorbed by the ocean.

OK, which is it folks?

(Never mind looking at geologically significant data when CO2 was significantly higher than it has been in the past few million years)

21 million years, huh. I’d like to see that data and where it came from.

They’ve given up on “global warming” for “climate change” now with Climategate they are ready to switch to “Ocean acidification”

The climate alarmists seem panicked. They are throwing every and any feramongering device they can out there in the hope that something will stick.

All their ideas are based on guess work. Since this effects the whole world, it should be based on facts. When the facts come out, the people of the world can make a choice instead of politicians making a buck.

It is a lot easier to acidify water by exposing it to lime stone than to CO2. We need to dredge up those pesky coral reefs. All that calcium carbonate exposed to the water is doing tremendous damage. /sarc

He explained that carbon dioxide is being absorbed at a faster rate than at any time in the previous 21 million years, causing ocean acidification.

If this is true, then the earth is cooling. Water absorbs CO2 when cooled. We're talking chem 101 here. Or the 5th grade field trip to the Coca-Cola bottling plant. They still do that don't they?

PS, if it is true, it is not a problem, but part of cyclical temperature changes. Ie... Ice age = ocean acidification to to CO2 absorption.

I see algore is using his "Junior Woodchuck Manual" again to cook up some more sky-is-falling crap about climate change.

I thought about an hour ago, the same "billion people" would have no safe drinking water. Now, they're going to starve, too?

Holy sunspots, Batman.....

I sure hope that thar "global warming" doesn't cause a billion people to lose cable TV...then we're really in trouble.

as usual, the enviro-jihadists are allowed to have their oxygen and breath it too.

From one fraud/hoax to the next, all in the name of a giant slush fund run by the UN.

It’s all about stealing other people’s money.

Indeed!

Which is it?

A warmer ocean (like a warm beer) will emit more CO2 to the atmospere than a colder ocean, but the “scientist” seems to think that “more” CO2 will be absorbed.

An cold ocean with more CO2 in solution will make it EASIER for coral and shell-forming animals to absorb the CO3 they need from the ocean.

Why, oh why, are climate “scientists” so ignorant of every other science?

He shouldn't worry. In his world this acid will be diluted by the melting ice caps and glaciers, right? Or does he not believe his bravo sierra either?

THE GLOBAL WARMING HOAX DIDN’T WORK SO NOW IT’S ONTO THE OCEANS.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE....THE OCEAN’S ARE GETTING TOO ACIDIC. YEAH THAT’S RIGHT, LET’S SEE THEN IF THE WATER IS TOO ACIDIC THE POLAR CAPS ARE GOING TO MELT, YEAH THAT’S GOOD, THEN THE WATER LEVEL WILL RISE AND THEN ALL THE POLAR BEARS ARE GOING TO DIE, YEAH LET’S SEE AND THEN ALL THE BIRDS AND FINALLY ALL THE HUMANS.

WELL IF THAT DOESN’T WORK THEN...

WOULD YOU BELIEVE ALL THE POLLUTION IS GETTING STUCK IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE OZONE HOLE IS GOING TO GET REALLY BIG. AND THEN THE SUN’S XRAYS WILL WARM UP THE EARTH THE POLAR CAPS ARE GOING TO MELT, YEAH THAT’S GOOD, THEN THE WATER LEVEL WILL RISE AND THEN ALL THE POLAR BEARS ARE GOING TO DIE, YEAH LET’S SEE AND THEN ALL THE BIRDS AND FINALLY ALL THE HUMANS.

WELL IF THAT DOESN’T WORK THEN...

WOULD YOU BELIEVE ALL THE WATER ON EARTH IS GOING TO EVAPORATE AND WE ARE GOING TO RUN OUT OF WATER.

WELL IF THAT DOESN’T WORK THEN...

WOULD YOU BELIEVE WE ARE GOING TO GET HIT BY AN ASTEROID.

ANYBODY ELSE HAVE ANY DOOMSDAY IDEAS?

“I wish they’d get it straight. I thought CO2 formed a greenhouse layer that kept heat in, thus causing global warming. Now I hear that it is absorbed by the ocean.”

Both.
4GT-Carbon/yr are absorbed by ocean and biomass. The rest of the CO2 stays in the atmosphere.

The liar Benn didnt tell you that the ocean has a pH of 8.1 and holds 50 TIMES the amount of CO2 as the atmosphere. It will take a long time to make the oceans in any way harmful to any sea life due to CO2. More acid oceans are more productive and the extra CO2 is good for plankton.

“A warmer ocean (like a warm beer) will emit more CO2 to the atmospere than a colder ocean, but the “scientist” seems to think that “more” CO2 will be absorbed.”

It depends more on the CO2 ratio in the atmosphere. We are under saturation levels for CO2 in the ocean, so this out-gassing effect wont really occur. This is particularly true because you have carbonate (HCO3-) in the oceans.
