At a time when the White House is projecting the largest deficit in the nation's history, Uncle Sam is trying to recover billions of dollars in unpaid taxes from its own employees.
Federal workers owe more than $3 billion in income taxes they failed to pay in 2008. According to Internal Revenue Service documents, 276,300 federal employees and retirees owe $3,042,200,000.
The IRS tracks the voluntary compliance rate of federal employees and retirees each year, and each year feds come up short. The one bright spot in this year's report is that after several years of a steady increase, the amount owed by feds is down from the previous year.
Federal employees and retirees owed $3,586,784,725 in unpaid income taxes in 2007.
The documents show delinquent employees from nearly every federal agency with more than 25 employees. Based on percentages, the Department of The Treasury, which includes the IRS, has the best compliance rate. Fewer than 1 percent of Treasury employees didn't pay their taxes in 2008.
The IRS is the only federal agency where employees can be fired for not paying their taxes. The non-compliance rate for IRS employees in 2008 was 0.76 percent -- down from 0.89 percent in 2007.
The agency with the most tax scofflaws is the U.S. Postal Service, with 28,913 employees who owe $297,933,756. But that is still a dramatic improvement from 2007 when more than 54,000 employees owed more than $407 million.

Obama would think this is only chump change.
Maybe I am missing something here. I was educated in the 60s and 70s and we did not have fuzzy math and a liberal/progressive education indoctrinated into us. Based on that, if you work for me, I pay you your salary. If you owe me money, I WILL be taking out of your salary starting with your next pay check. Just a thought.

For years I’ve ranted about the entire of the Federal bureaucracy being comprised of Leftists, and the content of this article IMO proves my point. Uncollected taxes in the Billions of dollars!?
Leftists really do believe they are some sort of chosen ones. Special people above, and distinctly unique life forms who were born to be the leaders of the ignorant masses, thus due their uniqueness, and stature in life aren’t subject to the rules the lesser folk must adhere to.

IMO, they should be fired for not paying their taxes! If they are dishonest about that would you trust them with any of your information so why trust them with government information?!

I think it’s time for everyone to recognize that the income tax sytstem is irrevocably broken, and needs to be eliminated, not repaired.
This doesn’t apply to ALL feds. There was a mistake on our 2005 returns made by the IRS, not us. They added a zero which took an income item from $1100 to $11,000 and they were trying to deny our adoption credit. Our accountant faxed the corrections TWICE and then it took getting an IRS advocate to get it fixed - and the IRS came after me immediately. I got nastygrams from HR at work and when I contacted the IRS I got yelled at by some jerk who told me Federal employees were held to a higher standard...until I reminded him that the new president could’nt seat a cabinet for all the democrat tax cheats.
I’m not talking about people who have honest mistakes. I’m talking about people who ignore the fact they owe the taxes and refuse to pay.
I understand completely how the IRS can screw up your return or refuse to fix it. I deal with it on a weekly basis. So many of the employees in the IRS are S T U P I D (and that doesn’t count the ones who don’t show up, period)! Thanks affirmative action!

The highest-paid federal employees are doing best of all on salary increases. Defense Department civilian employees earning $150,000 or more increased from 1,868 in December 2007 to 10,100 in June 2009, the most recent figure available.
When the recession started, the Transportation Department had only one person earning a salary of $170,000 or more. Eighteen months later, 1,690 employees had salaries above $170,000.
The trend to six-figure salaries is occurring throughout the federal government, in agencies big and small, high-tech and low-tech. The primary cause: substantial pay raises and new salary rules.
The number of "civil servants" making $100,000 or more has jumped over 46 percent since the start of the recession.
