Having defeated the Japanese fleet and faced down the Soviets, the U.S. Navy faces a new obstacle, one that hides behind a deceptively gentle, seagrass-munching façade.
Manatees may rank lower than such traditional menaces as torpedoes and air-to-sea missiles. But a proposal to protect additional habitat for them, the Navy says, could end up reducing habitat for destroyers, aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service soon will make a decision on whether to expand what's called critical habitat for the manatee in Florida and southern Georgia, in response to a petition from several environmental groups.

Lets line the environmentalists up and send them to the ovens first.
Manatees are fresh-water mammals....unless the Navy plans shallow-water subs along rivers and lakes....why would manatees need protection in salt water?
If they really want to save manatees....build more nuke plants. Manatees love the warmer water around the plants
Turning Sam Joaquin into a desert wasnt good enough , now they want to run the Navy out of the waters.
My understanding is that if you really look at the funding for the enviros who lobby against the USN pings, the source of the ca$h is usually some entity connected with China.
The key impediment to taking Taiwan would be excellent skills of sonarmen aboard USN subs —these men would be busy inviting Admiral Chang to take a very long underwater swim.
These skills require MUCH longer than people think, and they are highly, highly perishable.
So THAT is what this is all about; this time the Manatee, years ago it was whales, and if these manatee BS fails, next year it will be something else.
BUT IT IS ABOUT TAIWAN, OKAY? DO NOT BE FOOLED.
Kill ‘em, grind ‘em up, and sell ‘em to McDonald’s for their new “Big McManatee Burger Combo”.
Problem solved.
The Navy can’t fart without the Enviro agencies taking an atmosphere test.
When we were stationed a Cape Canaveral, the manatee would swim up to the dock where they waited for you to turn on the fresh water hose and give them a drink. I would go over there on my lunch break to meet my Husband and it was the coolest thing!
The water is brakish and is a protected bowl. There is a variety of sting ray, pompono, lobster and crab, dolphins would swim in when the barriers were opened to the port area on the Navy side of the barriers.
Fish and Game had a say over every single aspect at the port from dredging (if you crush more than 5 turtles, you must shut down operations) to keeping safe from a 14 foot gator who liked to hide by the soda machine and a cougar who we saw daily.
Cranes are shut down because an Osprey or owl decides to build a nest on it. Screw the fact that you have ships and subs coming in.
A TRIDENT sub impinging a sea grass bed has bigger problems than manatees.
Was a time that I fished many a tournament on that waterway...Even thought about living near it when I retired in 1986...
Fortunately, during the late 70's, a couple of dozen of us managed to get the Potomac River accidentally modified so that it, ultimately, became one of the finest bass fishing waters in the U.S.
No manatees to worry about...just floating debris in the form of congresscritters...
