Was very trendy about 7 years ago, when a place called "Crumbs" opened in the West Village and had lines of cakeboys and fag hags lining up around the block for something that was essentially a half-step up from Hostess.

The trend has petered out (the big thing now is gourmet hamburgers and shakes, I kid you not), but there a a few Crumbs franchisees and imitators still around.

We stayed on East 62nd St. and walked past a place on 57th every day called "The Cupcakery" (which cracked us up.)

We saw several other independent places proclaiming their cupcakes dotted around town as well.

We did also see quite a few gourmet burger places and in fact, partook at one near Times Square after a show. Can't remember the name, but it was actually quite good.
