Democratic Rep. Neil Abercrombie announced Friday that he will resign before the end of his term, just days after another Democrat, Rep. Brian Baird, announced his retirement.

Democratic Rep. Neil Abercrombie announced Friday that he will resign before the end of his term, just days after another Democrat, Rep. Brian Baird, announced his retirement.

A source told Fox News Abercrombie is resigning so he can focus on running for governor.

In a written statement, the Hawaii congressman said the effective date of his resignation will be announced soon, and that it was a difficult choice.

"This is an extremely difficult decision for me, but I must do this to continue with the direction I've chosen for the future. Accordingly, I've concluded that I must resign my congressional seat and allow someone to be elected who will carry on the work of this office," he said.

Abercrombie has held the seat since 1991. The announcement comes after Baird, a six-term congressman from Washington state, caught political analysts by surprise with his announced retirement.

Hmmm....If elected could Abercrombie influence the HI AG to initiate all manner of legal tactics to prevent or delay release of Obama’s vital records even if ordered by a court?

Abercrombie, being a college and young adult buddy of Obama's father having visited him in Kenya, could well be one of the few folks who actually knows why Obama's vital records are being concealed.

He’s probably resigning BEFORE he gets thrown out in 2010...he needs to do something to save face!

Now Hawaii has to deal with him...

If he does; he won’t have to work very hard at it! Hawaii is already pretty much ruined thanks to 55 years of predominantly democrat rule.

Now Hawaii has to deal with him...

Hawaii's had to deal with the idiotic hippie for the last 30 years. Abercrombie did helped shape my political outlook though... I remember the day that we ran into him wandering around town. A kid at the time, I thought that he was quite literally a dirty bum and my parents corrected me, sighing, "Somehow he's our Congressman." I was appalled.

I had hoped that his departure from the house would have been through an electoral defeat. Oh well.

Good. A hundred years in Congress is enough.

Now go out and get a real job.

Sheeyit. Yeah, right. As if he isn't going to end up as a million dollar a year lobbyist.
