Will consumers buy from a bankrupt auto maker? There always are bargain hunters, but I was certain many would stay away.
With Pontiac and Saturn out of the picture, I figured General Motors would be down to 16% market share, losing perhaps another 3% as worried potential buyers talked themselves out of visiting a GM showroom.
That would have left GM with as little as 13% share. At least, thats what I figured, and I have a lot of experience covering failing auto companies.
So far, Im wrong. GMs market share has been climbing since it left bankruptcy, hitting 20.2% in November. In 2009s first quarter, its average share was 18.7%.
I expected the bankruptcy to stifle sales to the point that Toyota and even Ford would catch GM during at least one month in 2009. But it hasnt happened. GM is likely to end the year with 2 million car and truck sales in the U.S., roughly 300,000 units ahead of Toyota and 400,000 units ahead of Ford.
I also figured Toyota or Ford would outsell GM in 2010. The gap between the three top sellers was cut in half in 2009, but I might have to back off the prediction. Toyota has its own troubles with safety and recall issues right now, and Ford isnt moving up as fast as I foresaw.
But GM vehicles have been getting good reviews and publicity lately, and a lot of solid new product is coming. The Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain cross/utility vehicles, Buick LaCrosse sedan, Cadillac CTS sportwagon and SRX luxury CUV are all-new, and were seeing lots of coverage of upcoming cars such as the Cruze, Chevy Camaro convertible, Buick Regal, Cadillac CTS coupe, and Chevy Volt extended-range electric vehicle.
Its a long and impressive list. ____________________________________

So are a lot of other manifestations of socialism.
Think the CHRYSLER bondholders were the ones Obambi screwed.....
Personally, I think GM is toast. The government and union ownership will run them into the ground.
Anyone that knows how the secured bond-holders (which included teacher's pension funds) were screwed by the bankruptcy would never buy from GM again.

GM’s cars get good reviews? Who paid for that?! Besides, what matters to me most is long term reliablity. GM isn’t very good on that scale, at least not in my experience.
I won’t buy a car from a company that is run by the UAW and the government. I just won’t. I’m own an old Corvette, and would like to move up to a newer one, but anything beyond a 2007 is just junk to me, won’t buy it. You’d have to give it to me.
Probably won’t buy GM again and I don’t want that foreign crap so it looks like Ford is all that’s left.
I haven’t heard a single peep about Chrysler in months. They must be brain-dead and on life support. GM on the other hand, is in hospice care. They may be alive, alert and oriented right now, but their disease is terminal.
Of course it’s climbing, they can’t fail! The government has unlimited resources to pour into it. Too bad for those other stupid capitalists car manufacturers because they’ll still have to make a profit to stay in business.
Period.
I have been a life long Chevy owner.
I am currently driving one now, a 2003 Chevy C1500 Silverado. It was a great truck for about the first two years. Then things have been falling apart ever since. Including several "repeat" problems.
Then came the Govt. takeover of GM and well, that was it. I now am looking into Ford or Nissan for my next truck. GM can go to H#LL.
Good, I have 500 shares of their stock. Maybe I can make a buck... or three
Unfortunately, while I would like Ford to succeed, buying a Ford means you give money to the Democrat party.
And more of the foreign makes are made here in the US than Fords are.
My 1980 Buick Skylark was the last GM product I bought. I swore the company off.
>>GM is on the way back!<<
Whoopee for Government Motors/0bambi Motors. I’ve been a General Motors man all my life. Now, they can rot in Hades before I buy from the government.
Out of curiosity, what year is the Vette?
I was tempted to buy one of those new Camaros but I came to my senses and I will be getting a Ford Shelby GT500 instead.
