Just one more game would help tremendously, the winners of Texas-Alabama goes against the winner of TCU-BSU.
What about Cincinnati? Because they’re small they are getting the screws put to them. I’m not saying they could play with Texas, Notre Dame, or USC every week...but they deserve a shot on one day, in one big game.
Hate this system.
Cincinnati is getting arguably the second best team in the country in their bowl (we’ll see what Bama does to Texas).
The Hall of Dynasties does not accept new members.
Has to be one of the best thought-out and reasoned arguments made so far (that I am aware of). It makes TOO much sense for the NCAA dictatorship to accept. Seems that in the end, such an arrangement would actually mean MORE money to the schools and to the NCAA, would lend a massive amount of credibility to a system that almost can’t help but have a big “?” next to every single crowned “champion”.
Works for me! They should take the conference champions from EVERY conference and then fill out the rest with the top ranked teams until you have 16 teams. Use the existing bowl games to create a playoff system.
Just like the PROs use, lowest plays the highest (just like your chart)!
“The system is designed to reward the big brands of the sport.”
No, it’s not. The system was invented by the SEC to promote the SEC. End of story.
Agree. There isn’t much of a reason for more than that. Ohio State and Oregon shouldn’t even be in the discussion.
What’s even more humiliating (or at least, should be), the lower divisions have a playoff system that works perfectly. A Champion wins on the field, not via PR... in the same sport that DIV I-A can’t figure out!
I think you could use the BCS bowls with at large bids and get a good result w/8 instead of 16 teams. This year, I would make this the bracket. Rose - Ohio State v. Oregon; Fiesta - TX v. Boise State; Sugar - Alabama v. TCU; Orange-Cincinatti v. Georgia Tech, and re-seed after those bowls.
Yes folks we have a winner, the big conferences in general and the SEC specifically came up with the BCS to freeze out the smalls so things like BYU geting their national championship in like ‘85 or ‘86 wouldn’t occur again. IMO
The SEC has 10 out of twelve teams in bowls! I have to ask if the SEC intra-conference is so tough what kind of out of conference schedule did these guys play for nearly EVERYONE in the conference to go bowling?
In NCAA basketball, March Madness brings in the bucks big time. Why not do the same in football?
The problem is these aren't pros. They are students and for the most part still kids.
If Boise and Cinci want to be in the top 4 then make sure you play USC, Ohio State or Florida in the regular season.
Boise St. has tried for years - remember the testifying before Congress where the BCS Schools acknowledged Boise St.’s attempts to get bigger schools to play them? They get turned down every time, with the exception of more “local” schools, like Oregon and Oregon St. Even the big Conference folks admitted as much.
No BCS school wants to play Boise St. as a non-BCS Conference opponent because the risks are high and the rewards are little. The computer gives them nothing for their efforts, and the BCS-stacked polls aren't going to boost them for winning a non-BCS Conference game that isn't spelled “N-O-T-R-E D-A-M-E.” On the other hand, those same pollsters will destroy your chances if you lose or even have to BARELY squeeze out a win.
Even for the next four years of scheduling, Boise St. has been unable to lure anyone bigger than Oregon, BYU, or Utah into a game. This is not accidental - it is a purposeful effort by the individual schools in their own best interests, and by the BCS Conferences who do things to make sure the other schools aren't taken seriously (like post them against each other in the Fiesta Bowl to minimize the victory or either team).
[If Boise and Cinci want to be in the top 4 then make sure you play USC, Ohio State or Florida in the regular season.]
In that case, if USC, Ohio State and Florida want to remain in the top 4, then they need to play TCU, Boise and Cinci instead of Appalachian State, Florida International and all the other Podunk U’s that they use to pad their schedules.
No disrespect to any of these schools, but your argument is mute considering the teams these other guys play each year. And as Appalachian State showed two seasons ago against Michigan, anyone can beat anyone on any given day - let them play!
