As Barack Obama prepares to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, the Dalai Lama tells Sky News he believes the award is "a little early".
He also cautioned the US president against relying too much on his advisers.
The exiled Tibetan leader won the Nobel prize 20 years ago for his peaceful opposition to Chinese rule in his country.
President Obama is in Norway to collect his award, which he has controversially been awarded in his first year in office.
Some commentators have joked that the award was for "not being George Bush".
The Dalai Lama told Sky News: "I think if you are realistic, it may have been a little early but it doesn't matter, I know Obama is a very able person.
"Sometimes these individual persons rely on different advice from different people so like former President Bush junior, as a human being I really love him, really wonderful person, very honest, very truthful.
"But I think due to his advisers' views, some of his policies have been a disaster."
The spiritual leader described Mr Obama as "young and energetic".

The Dali Llama doesn’t like this guy...so...we got that going for us...
Do ya think...?
He doesn’t need the presidency either.
Can't say the Norwegians did not deserve this!
On the other hand, the so-called “Nobel Peace Prize” has long since been shown to be nothing but a worthless joke that isn’t even funny.
You reap what you sow. They trashed the "Prize" so long ago, it's not surprising it came to this. After all, the "Zero" deserved this merely by existing.
“A big hitter the Lama......”
Naaah. The Nobel Piece Prize and 0bama are a perfect match . . . neither is worth "a bucket of warm spit."
Saying Obama’s Nobel is a little early is like saying the sun is a little hot.
>> The Dali Llama doesnt like this guy...so...we got that going for us...
Dali Llama, Dick Cheney, and not to forget, Viking Kitty!
So, how is this a slam at Obama?
Why do liberals generally think so highly of the Dalai Lama?
Its often because they want a way to excuse their immorality and they want to try to find a way to atone for their own wickedness by liberal feel-goodism.
The Lama considers himself "half Marxist and half b*ddhist" and is the world's most politically correct "anti-Communist refugee," so I'm not a huge fan.
HH the Dalai Lama is quite a master of understatement! But, after Obama ignored the Lama, it was only his virtue that kept him from giving “The One” a well deserved lesson on “comeupance.”
The Dalai Lama has crossed over from the red hat Mahayana Buddhist sect to the retrograde bat shit crazy Hinayana sect.
Poor man. He’s about to set back Tibetan Buddhism 10,000 years. Look for a tree to swing in and try to catch a glimpse of the last mandala.
This guy is really blowing up the buddhist religion. Need a few new tulkas to refresh the movement.
I don’t think he’s really living the life of an austre monk. Does anyone know if he stays in a hotel or camps out in a tent?
“The Lama considers himself “half Marxist and half b*ddhist” and is the world’s most politically correct “anti-Communist refugee,””
There’s funny irony in that statement.
Dalai Lama is right on the money—I predict that Obama will do nothing to merit this award in his whole 4 years in the White House. He has shown all that he can do—bow and give speeches.
