Coverage Without Borders
By ROGER MAHONY Published: December 7, 2009 LOS ANGELES
AS the leaders of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops noted last month, the current health care reform bills in Congress are fundamentally flawed because they fall short in three critical areas: the prohibition of federal financing for abortions and the protection of current conscience laws; the inclusion of meaningful provisions to ensure affordability; and the defense of immigrants rights to health care.
Although all three areas are critical for this proposed legislation to be acceptable to the Catholic Church in our country, I would like to focus on the lack of adequate health care for immigrants who live in our midst but who do not yet have legal standing.
The two bills are quite different. The Senate bill bars undocumented immigrants from using even their own money to buy health insurance in the government-sponsored marketplace, or exchange, being proposed. The House bill allows undocumented immigrants to purchase health insurance from the exchange, if they use their own money and receive no federal subsidy.
Most studies estimate that more than 10 million undocumented immigrants live in our country. Many have been here for decades. The majority of these immigrants live in mixed families some members of the family were born here, while other relatives are here without documents.
It is unrealistic to think that these millions of people with roots deep in their communities are somehow going to pack up and move back to their country of origin whether that is Korea, the Philippines, Russia, England, France or Mexico. Most have their children in local schools, the vast majority of them have jobs here, and all are contributing to the betterment of our nation.

The world in general and Holy Church in particular will be better off after Mahony is either retired or dead.
It’s nice for the NYT to publish Mahoney’s op-eds but refuse to publish Archbishop Dolan’s. /sarc
If they are illegal, they should not be able to buy so much as a popsicle in this country.
Mahony has lost much, mostly all, of his non-Hispanic congregations in the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara. He is beholden to Hispanics in general and of course the illegals who use him for political purposes.
Mahony has trashed the traditional Church Sacred Liturgy and Music and his $125 million Taj Mahony Cathedral has been described as a nondescript architectural warehouse. Hardly any statuary adorns the interior of the Church and atop the entry portal is a muscular sleeveless sculpture of the Virgin Mary.
This guy should have been booted out and kicked of the Catholic Church decades ago. Without a single doubt, his appointment was John Paul II’s greatest blunder.
Mahony is disgusting in general. A lot of Hispanics don’t like him either, btw, because he’s not orthodox.
Mahony is nothing but a Dem party operative. He cultivates Hispanic organizations tied in with the Dems, and he cultivates bizarro nuns and gays. He doesn’t have the guts to personally oppose the Pope, so he lurks along and does everything in an underhanded way.
Some people are not suppose to lie, and this is an out right lie. The catholics and their compassion and my wallet,
John Paul had many blunders. Most of the horrid bishops we're stuck with now were appointmented by him. He also was responsible for female altar boys, communion in the hand while standing and many of the other liberal "reforms" we're all now suffering through.
