Kenneth Jerome Nelson, widely known as self-appointed guardian of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Capitol Park, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to wearing a Silver Star he did not earn.
Nelson, 60, of Sacramento, had garnered coverage by local television and The Bee as the unofficial caretaker of the memorial. He posed as the recipient of medals from his time as a Marine in Vietnam.

If he had been honest: "I'm no hero, but I sure served with some ... and that's why I'm taking care of the memorial" . ...
Everybody would have slapped him on the back, and said "Good Job!"
But Noooooooooooo .....

I served, and I have the same question. Of course, I also don’t wear decorations I didn’t earn, but those who do are pathetic losers who should be shamed but not treated as criminals.

I just don't get these people I don't either. I've always been very honest with people that I was a Cold War soldier and fortunately never had to fire a shot in anger.

How is that relevant? There are a lot of things I find offensive as well, but I don’t believe in making recourse to the law to suppress them.
This is the kind of logic that is justifying hate-crime legislation (adding thought-crime as an aggravating factor in ordinary crimes) and to people being prosecuted by various governments for criticising Islam or Homosexuality....
