Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took his GOP-blasting rhetoric to a new level Monday, comparing Republicans who oppose health care reform to lawmakers who clung to the institution of slavery more than a century ago.
The Nevada Democrat, in a sweeping set of accusations on the Senate floor, also compared health care foes to those who opposed women's suffrage and the civil rights movement.
"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right," Reid said. "When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down, it's too early, things aren't bad enough.'"
He continued: "When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn't quite right.
"When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today."
The history lesson appeared to have some of its partisan wires crossed, however. It was Sen. Strom Thurmond, then a Democrat, who famously and unsuccessfully tried to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1957. And in the 19th Century, it was Republicans who led the charge against slavery.

Their sheer stupidity and arrogance is showing. Again.
It was his party that clung to the institution of slavery.
Harry knows he’s toast.
Harry is senile.
Oh I get it now...Republicans are greedy bigots. Gee no one ever made that case before. ;-) Harry’s Place: A bunch of idiots stuck on stupid.
Erm ... it was the DEMS who clung to the institution of slavery, Reid -- ask your buddy, Byrd, he knows all about this stuff.
Ceding authority over health care to big government IS slavery.
That does it Harry. Fill your hand you son of a bitch...
No one listens to Reid any more. He is a crippled duck!
When a liberal loses the debate, he pulls the race card in a desperate attempt to salvage his image. Epic fail.
It was Democrats who opposed women's suffrage...
It was Republicans who passed the 1964 Civil Rights act with larger numbers and percentages than Democrats. (The most vocal opponent was Albert Arnold Gore, Sr, by the way.)
So sad that our populace is so uninformed that the Left can get away with comments like these.
socialism IS slavery. You’re not working for yourself, but for someone else under someone else’s priorities
That’s odd, the supporters of slavery were DEMOCRATS!
This man deserves no healthcare ever. He deserves the worst that life has to offer and I hope he gets it one of these days.
He and the shewolf of the house are scum of the worst sort.
Sen. Reid is loony tunes.
Oh. My. God. Reid needs to be run out of town with tar and feathers on a rail for his despicable statement. The vast majority of Americans opposed this monstrosity. In fact, Obamacare is the modern day equivalent of slavery and Reid is the slavemaster!
We’ll all be slaves for life if this Obama-Reid-Pelosi care monstrosity ever passes.
Maybe it’ll be in Congressional archives, possibly available on THOMAS.
No, he’s got it all wrong. The supporters of his cr*ppy bill are supporters of slavery, and worse. (I can’t say what I really think about this scum, because I’d be permanently banned from FR if I did.)
