Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took his GOP-blasting rhetoric to a new level Monday, comparing Republicans who oppose health care reform to lawmakers who clung to the institution of slavery more than a century ago.
The Nevada Democrat, in a sweeping set of accusations on the Senate floor, also compared health care foes to those who opposed women's suffrage and the civil rights movement.
"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right," Reid said. "When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down, it's too early, things aren't bad enough.'"
He continued: "When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn't quite right.
"When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today."
The history lesson appeared to have some of its partisan wires crossed, however. It was Sen. Strom Thurmond, then a Democrat, who famously and unsuccessfully tried to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1957. And in the 19th Century, it was Republicans who led the charge against slavery.

With all due respect, I could care less what YOU think - stop with the condescending comments.
Democrats are such unscrupulous lying cynics. The Democrats supported slavery, secession, segregation, Jim Crow, lynching, and opposed civil rights laws.
As for being on “the right side of history”, socialism failed in the 20th century, and what makes anyone think it’s going to work this time? Nationalized healthcare is a mess in many countries.
Dirty Harry Reid. He wants healthcare to pass since he has back-end compensation for himself and his corrupt family members. These people would sell us into slavery if they were part of the protected, wealthy class.
This healthcare deal stinks of payoffs. They should all go to prison.
Harry Reid can kiss my arse.
Hate speech!
Reid has likened us to slaveholders, and the GOP barely mumbles it's outrage. And not a f***ing word from Michael Steele!!
Well said!
Michael Steele agrees with Reid. It was only last month that Steele said that white Republicans were afraid of him. Steele is a fifth columnist who will put the knife in the back of the GOP at the most inopportune time - likely in the midst of the 2012 election race - when he’ll announce that the Republicans are too racist for him and that he’s chosen to endorse Obama for re-election. Wait for it.
It’s time the GOP just left the chamber and let the Rats and “Independents” figure out how they want to proceed. There’s no point in standing there listening to Reid’s crap.
Yeah Harry. I’m a supporter of slavery because I oppose the framework of it’s revival that you and your ilk are trying to ram down my throat.
GFY.
Thats exactly what I was thinking....but I am listening to Mark Levin....I think he is right...Why does the GOP keep voting on ammendments? It's stupid! They should filibuster by reading the bill on the floor...slowly. Something for #*^@ sake!
I will never use the word “hate,” but I really, really loathe and detest that scumbag Harry Reid. Go Lowden or Tarkanian!!!
Why do they (R’s) insist on debating abortion? Once the health care is in place, the HHS can change any rules they want.
On second thought...I think you are 100% right, maybe we should take it a bit further. Have 1 GOP, (rotate out as needed) read the bill on the floor. The other 39 should make scene elsewhere in the building and be joined by all the GOP members in the house. All GOP need to make themselves heard...now.
Here's info I got from Wikipedia.
By party and region
Note: "Southern", as used in this section, refers to members of Congress from the eleven states that made up the Confederate States of America in the American Civil War. "Northern" refers to members from the other 39 states, regardless of the geographic location of those states.
The original House version:
* Northern Democrats: 145-9 (94%-6%)
* Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15%)
The Senate version:
That’s too faced, coming from someone who wants to enslave the American people to the government.
Correction, he’s two-faced.
And people of Nevada - will you PLEASE send this criminal packing?
