San Francisco health officials reported an alarming increase in new syphilis cases last year after years of declines.

New syphilis cases rose 55.8 percent in 2008 over the previous year, San Francisco public health officials reported.

The increase was significantly lower than the dramatic spikes reported early in the decade, when new infections increased 167 percent from 2001 to 2002. But last year's rise would seem to indicate an increase in unsafe sexual practices, which could lead to a rise in HIV infection rates.

Let’s see. Through the use of deductive reasoning with the evidence provided the most obvious conclusion would be -— oh wait it’s not something scientifically evident as global warming.

Syphilis has several stages - Primary - Secondary and Tertiary ... and seems to go dormant in-between...

Ignoring the Primary and Secondary stages - which is fairly easy to do since the signs and symptoms in the first two stages are not dramatically noticeable - one can go through life and not figure it out... But the Tertiary Stage will ‘get ‘ya.’

Many famous people of the 1600 - 1700 and 1800s lived and died with Syphilis infecting their hearts and brains...

This is the reason for higher HIV infection in Africa: the higher rates of STDs creating open sores where the HIV virus can enter.

This is also a leading indicator that condoms are not being used.
