Why would somebody that’s only making $18G pay hundreds at H&R Block, she should have a pretty simple tax return, probably not worth paying somebody in the first place and definitely not complex enough to cost hundreds. When the IRS picks you for an audit, as opposed to the random audits, it’s a sniff test issue. Too poor for the area and too poor for the method of filing certainly smells funny.

Earned Income Credit. It’s not a simple Check Here box any longer.

Just doing a 1040ez using basic deductions would bring her down into such a low taxable income, if she missed a deduction here or there, it would probably still offset what HR charges her.
Besides, I've gone to a guy for a few years now, because I've worked in multiple states and collected unemployment outside my home state, and didn't want to get hung up on technicalities. Walk in, hand him my stuff, and 1/2 hour later walk out, with everything done. If I remember right, it cost me either $75 or $100. But I have peace of mind.

The post doesn't say what area of Seattle the lady lives in. It's entirely possible that she lives in a low-rent or free-rent situation with a relative. If she watches her money, takes the bus (Seattle has a pretty good public transportation system.), and doesn't pay for rent, it could be done. Still, getting audited because you're an anomaly is pretty stupid. Maybe she has a printing press in the basement and churns out Benjamins when she needs them...
