AP-VT — Court Gunshot,1st Ld-Writethru,0125 Gun of Vt. deputy goes off in court; no injuries Eds: APNewsNow; adds day of incident in 3rd graf, minor editing. BARRE, Vt. (AP) — A Washington County sheriff’s deputy is under suspension after a personal weapon he brought to the county courthouse in Barre went off. The name of the deputy was not released. WCAX-television says the deputy was in a section of the courthouse Wednesday where he was screening people to ensure they did not bring weapons into court when the shot was fired. Sheriff Sam Hill says it was against policy for the deputy to bring a personal weapon to work. Hill says the deputy thought the gun was unloaded, but it discharged as he was handling it. The bullet hit the floor and disintegrated. Hill says it was lucky no one was hurt.

More negligent firearms handling by those liberals claim should be the only people armed.

More negligent firearms handling by those liberals claim should be the only people armed. VT requires no permit to carry. AK is the only other state like that. VT might send liberal d-bags to Washington but their gun laws are pretty good.

...deputy thought the gun was unloaded,...

Repeat after me.

1. Always, always, always treat a firearm as if it is loaded.
2. Always, always, always treat a firearm as if it is loaded.
3. Never, never, never put a firearm into the hands of someone who isn't capable of understanding 1 and 2.

The weapon discharged all by itself? The deputy never pulled the trigger?
I wonder what kind of gun it was.

It was a “liberal” gun, you know...has a mind of it’s own.

I am glad to see the officer got the same treatment that a member of the public would have gotten had they negligently touched one off in the courthouse....that is, arrested, charged with felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor discharging a weapon within the city limits! It’s about time the police were held to the same standards of behavior as the rest of us! Kudos to the Police Chief for upholding the letter of the law!!!!

Uhhh...wait a second......did I miss something when I read this article.....?

What the Sam Hill?

Weapons don't just "go off", and ANY supposed professional police officer or deputy should be above THINKING the gun was unloaded and not following the four basic rules of gun safety (not to mention following departmental policy), which would have prevented this NEGLIGENT discharge.

The deputy should be FIRED.

He won’t be fired but he will probably get chewed out, suspended, a permanent letter in his jacket and ridicule for a long time from his colleagues as well as being sent to retraining.

Other than this obvious brain cramp episode, we know nothing else about the deputy. Let’s not be so hasty to put a man out of a job.

Even my old man, who did two tours in the Nam and shot on the Marine Corps pistol team, had an accidental discharge when drawing from the holster. That round grazed his calf and left an indelible reminder.

A person has to discipline themselves time and again until it becomes as normal as breathing about handling firearms.

Glocks (or any other type of firearm) only “go off” when teh trigger is pulled. Glocks have no higher propensity to discharge than any other make of pistol.

Simple question: How many here would walk around the mall or the grocery store with their 1911 in Condition Zero?

I heard that the gun drove itself to court in an evil SUV.

Guns don’t kill people! Sight alignment, breath control and trigger squeeze do!..............And unloaded guns!

Provided the trigger is not pulled while the grip safety is depressed then a 1911 in condition zero has zero risk of discharge.
