Tucson, Ariz. (AP) -- A judge has threatened to sentence an Arizona man to 25 days in prison for leaving jugs of water in the desert for illegal immigrants.
A federal jury in June convicted Walt Staton of Tucson of littering in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge.
. . .
Staton is a member of the group No More Deaths, which supports humanitarian aid along the border. He was scheduled to be re-sentenced Friday after he told a U.S. magistrate last month that he objected to the court's punishment on moral and legal grounds.

“prison”
LOL he got 25 days in jail. Hell I did 6 months for drunk driving some years back.
thats not right.
once someone makes the decision to cross and they are dying, i’;d say give em some water.
What? No ice?
Good. I’m sick and tired of Mexico, its people and their imperialist bullsh!t. This isn’t their country, we aren’t some F’ing Wal-Mart here for their benefit so they can just stroll on in here and we’re supposed to just put up with it.
Fine by me.
However, people don’t go to “prison” for 25 days, they go to jail.
If they know there will be water, they are more likely to make the decision to cross.
Why don't you haul your a$$ down there right now!
We pluck bobbing Cubans out of the Atlantic.
It is one thing to come across a person who is dying of thrist and to give them water.
It is another thing entirely to leave water where you expect a person illegally entering the US will find it aiding them in their crime.
This is the same thing as the coyotes bringing across illegals in their pickups with the exception of profit.
Wrong, I did not tell them to start. They should have been dodging bullets when they set their foot across the border.
Only the ones the sharks don't get, and then they are sent home
And return them.

I think that the issue is making water available in that area, which becomes a formal asset to illegal penetration of our border security, not a one time incidence of lending assistance to some one in need.
It is also similar to the problem of feeding wild animals until they become dependent, what happens when once an expectation is developed, the water jugs are no longer delivered and placed around, how many people die before the word of mouth spreads?
Again you are finding someone in need. You are not leaving boat out in the Atlantic with the expectation that the Cubans will find it.
And the Cubans are returned to Cuba if they are plucked out of the Atlantic. They only get to stay if they make it to shore unaided.
The Cubans are running from a despotic regime not economic chaos. They are a special case.
If you help the illegals you are aiding and abetting a federal crime.
The federal government is also setting up water stations to help illegals make the trip across the border.
The bureaucrats and politicians who came up with the idea should be going to prison too. And for a lot more than 25 days.
AP just can't get anything right, can they?
