The Dutch navy has arrested 13 Somali pirates who attempted to hijack a cargo ship south of Oman.
The EU anti-piracy task force Navfor says the cargo ship - called MV BBC Togo - had barbed wire defences and held off an attack by two fast skiffs.
The Dutch warship Evertsen later found a dhow with two skiffs fitting the description in the area.
A boarding team arrested the pirates, seizing machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, ladders and grappling hooks.
The pirates may be handed over to Kenya or the Seychelles for prosecution, says the Dutch defence ministry. The attack on the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged cargo ship happened 150 nautical miles (186km) south of Salalah in Oman.
Pirate attacks have been common off the Somali coast and international navies have been deployed to counter them.
Navfor is one of several international naval forces patrolling the seas off Somalia to try to prevent the hijacking of ships using the vital sea routes. Nato and the US also lead task forces.

Arrest?
Doesn’t the Dutch navy have any guns????
THREAD BUMP.
Don`t Dutch Naval Vessels still have yardarms ?
They have Goalkeeper...
yeah it´s really frustrating.
even more because it would be so easy to “stop” them.
since international waters are a law free zone they could kill them anytime they want without fear to break any international law (because this just does not exist in international waters). but then again thanks to politicians for the current ROE.
yep. this is exactly the way how the navy should deal with pirates. but i have little to no hope that this will happen in my lifetime. well maybe if the chinese start to hunt pirates...
Why arrest them if you are going to hand them back to the Kenyans to be set free.
Interesting how besides one incident we never read about the US Navy doing anything to these hostis humani generis.
DEATH TO PIRATES! NO QUARTER!
Catch and release. It's all done for some commemorative photos.
I just don’t understand why moderate pirates don’t come forward and condemn these attacks.
