Why women are (or are not) reading Sarah Palin
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | December 2, 2009 | Marjorie Kehe

Posted on 12/02/2009 9:03:33 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

“When women talk about Palin,” points out Lisa Belkin, “it’s not just politics, it’s personal.” No kidding. And that at least partially explains the fervor of Palin fans like cousins Nicole Colter and Stephanie Jefferson who drove 4-1/2 hours (Colter) or flew six hours (Jefferson) to Springfield, Mo., to get Palin to autograph their copies of “Going Rogue” and then to hear her speak at the College of the Ozarks.

But Belkin, who published a piece called “Why Women Can’t Let Sarah Palin Go” in The New York Times, sees at least as much animosity as admiration in the female response to Palin. She believes that hardworking, educated women respond to Sarah Palin the way they did to the head cheerleader in high school. (Even though in fact Palin was not a cheerleader but the captain of her high_school basketball team.)

“Pretty and popular, with no apparent interest in studying, she’s the one who industrious girls were tacitly promised would not succeed in the real world,” writes Belkin.”Whether we voted for Hillary or not, we weren’t about to let Palin breeze in, with her sexy librarian hair and her peekaboo-toed shoes, conforming to every winking, air-brained stereotype, and sashay to the front of the line.”

And yet, she admits, “Which is not to say we didn’t like her for a moment. We were intrigued by this woman who could govern a state and raise five children and field-dress a moose; who seemed to do what the rest of us could not manage – to have it all.”

Eilene Zimmerman, writing for True/Slant, says she sees an even more basic reason for women (or men) to dismiss Palin: “[S]he’s simply not smart.” And yet Zimmerman has trouble reconciling that perception with this fact: “She’s sold a million books in two weeks.”(continued)

Except that the first thing she wanted to do as VP was to spend federal funds on special needs children. That’s a state issue. She is no different than all the other big spenders once they get access to federal spending.

“The gender-bending Palins”

...A man’s greatest fulfillment is achieved through his family role as the guide, protector and provider, as Aubrey Andelin states in “Man of Steel and Velvet.” Proverbs 31 says that he is “recognized at the city meetings and he makes decisions as one of the leaders of the land.”

According to Bryce J. Christensen, author of “Divided We Fall: Family Discord and the Fracturing of America,” feminist activist groups in the ‘90s “called for complete integration of women into all military operations, including those of combat units.” Their goal was to put women into “macho posts” not previously held by women. This moves us closer to the feminist dream that a woman may one day be commander in chief of the armed forces of our nation.

Christensen also states, “Utopian designs for masculinizing women, marginalizing men and vaporizing family homes are far more than literary fantasies. At least two real-world political movements – Marxism and feminism – have devoted considerable effort to pursuing [such] utopian objectives.”

How ironic that Christian conservatives rightly faulting Obama as a socialist so readily applaud Palin whose feminist views, whether realized or not, share much in common with Marxism.

Praised as virtuous by desperate conservatives, Sarah and Todd Palin fit nicely into today’s modern version of Christianity where true masculinity in the form of family leadership is absent, and women abdicate feminine roles in the home.

Christensen says, “Anyone who understands American culture, anyone who understands American family life, anyone who understands the American military knows that men – masculine, manly, chivalric men – are necessary. We desperately need such men – just as we need feminine women – to restore gender sanity, family integrity and military strength.”

You understand that it's Democrats who vote in Democrat primaries, right?”

Democrats, some independents and some Republicans, depending on the state and what that state's laws are.

and if you don't count Michigan, she doesn't win the popular vote either. ‘

I count Michigan, given that they are part of this country, but then got disenfranchised by the Democratic Party machine for merely changing their date.

Hilary had high negatives, Obama didn't. Hilary lost the primary, Obama won. It's as simple as that”

High negatives never stopped Hilary from winning more votes in the primaries than 0bama did,
Its that simple.
Not to mention, Sarah Palin currently has better approve/disapprove than 0bama anyways, so your point is moot. If it came down to who has more negatives, she still beats 0bama.

Palin is polling better than her Republican counterparts precisely because she's better known - thanks to John McCain”

Chortle.
Bring McCain against Sarah Palin in the polls and see who wins.
Hey Sarah Palin did not take part in the primaries debates last year. Huckabee, Romney and all the rest of them did, all over the country. Plus Huckabee has his own TV show. They are all as well known as Sarah Palin. She just happen to be more popular that's all.

Hilary Clinton was better known than Barack Obama, who I don't believe polled above single digits - if at all - a year before the first Democrat primary”

Ummm..it was Sarah Palin that was behind Huckabee and Romney all year, until her book came out. She is the one that had to come back from behund in the polls and take the lead in the polls, not the other way round.

I suspect that the next Republican nominee will be somebody who's relatively unknown and doesn't come with all the oppressive and embarrassing baggage that plagues Palin”

I suspect you are in denial, living in dreamland, and prone to having fantasies. There is no new Messiah coming out of the bush to come save us all. You betcha.

"Bring McCain against Sarah Palin in the polls and see who wins."

No one knew who Sarah Palin was before that Friday in August when John McCain plucked her from obscurity. No one.

"There is no new Messiah coming out of the bush to come save us all"

I'm not looking for a Messiah, apparently you are.

I'm looking for a nominee who can form complete sentences, actually win a debate with a retard like Joe Biden, and get a daughter past the age of 17 and out of high school before getting knocked up. Oh, and who won't select someone to stand on her nominating stage just 12 months he decides to pose for Playgirl magazine. Just saying.

No one knew who Sarah Palin was before that Friday in August when John McCain plucked her from obscurity. No one.

That just isn’t true, many of us were aware of the most popular Governor in America and how she was shaking up her state’s corrupt establishment.

“The Most Popular Governor
Alaska’s Sarah Palin is the GOP’s newest star.
by Fred Barnes
07/16/2007, Volume 012, Issue 41

Juneau
The wipeout in the 2006 election left Republicans in such a state of dejection that they’ve overlooked the one shining victory in which a Republican star was born. The triumph came in Alaska where Sarah Palin, a politician of eye-popping integrity, was elected governor. She is now the most popular governor in America, with an approval rating in the 90s, and probably the most popular public official in any state.

Her rise is a great (and rare) story of how adherence to principle—especially to transparency and accountability in government—can produce political success. And by the way, Palin is a conservative who only last month vetoed 13 percent of the state’s proposed budget for capital projects. The cuts, the Anchorage Daily News said, “may be the biggest single-year line-item veto total in state history.”

As recently as last year, Palin (pronounced pale-in) was a political outcast. She resigned in January 2004 as head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission after complaining to the office of Governor Frank Murkowski and to state Attorney General Gregg Renkes about ethical violations by another commissioner, Randy Ruedrich, who was also Republican state chairman.

State law barred Palin from speaking out publicly about ethical violations and corruption. But she was vindicated later in 2004 when Ruedrich, who’d been reconfirmed as state chairman, agreed to pay a $12,000 fine for breaking state ethics laws. She became a hero in the eyes of the public and the press, and the bane of Republican leaders.

In 2005, she continued to take on

the Republican establishment by joining Eric Croft, a Democrat, in lodging an ethics complaint against Renkes, who was not only attorney general but also a long-time adviser and campaign manager for Murkowski. The governor reprimanded Renkes and said the case was closed. It wasn’t. Renkes resigned a few weeks later, and Palin was again hailed as a hero.
snip
In 2006, she didn’t hesitate. She ran against Gov. Murkowski, who was seeking a second term despite sagging poll ratings, in the Republican primary. In a three-way race, Palin captured 51 percent and won in a landslide. She defeated former Democratic governor Tony Knowles in the general election, 49 percent to 41 percent. She was one of the few Republicans anywhere in the country to perform above expectations in 2006, an overwhelmingly Democratic year. Palin is unabashedly pro life.

With her emphasis on ethics and openness in government, “it turned out Palin caught the temper of the times perfectly,” wrote Tom Kizzia of the Anchorage Daily News. She was also lucky. News broke of an FBI investigation of corruption by legislators between the primary and general elections. So far, three legislators have been indicted.

In the roughly three years since she quit as the state’s chief regulator of the oil industry, Palin has crushed the Republican hierarchy (virtually all male) and nearly every other foe or critic. Political analysts in Alaska refer to the “body count” of Palin’s rivals. “The landscape is littered with the bodies of those who crossed Sarah,” says pollster Dave Dittman, who worked for her gubernatorial campaign. It includes Ruedrich, Renkes, Murkowski, gubernatorial contenders John Binkley and Andrew Halcro, the three big oil companies in Alaska, and a section of the Daily News called “Voice of the Times,” which was highly critical of Palin and is now defunct.”

I would say that Mitt Romney has been very much in the public eye since 1993, he has run several campaigns over those years that were well covered nationally, he capped it off with a 150 million dollar personal campaign for President and then has maintained a high profile since then.

You have to know that if Palin was not such a competent politician that she would have faded from, rather than grown in importance after the three months with McCain and the nonstop attack from the left and the rinos, and she has yet to build her machine or run her own personal 150 million dollar ad campaign for herself. Conservatives strongly support Governor Palin and that is what puts her in front, which is a rare place for a conservative to be.

No one knew who Sarah Palin was before that Friday in August when John McCain plucked her from obscurity. No one”

Clued in Freepers knew who she was.
There are plenty of posts on here about her, long before John McCain chose her.
You might search the archives. Plus she wrote an article on this country's oil policies in the New York Times (yes that bastion of liberalism), long before McCain nominated her.
Of course none of that changes the fact that she'd clobber McCain in any head to head poll for the 2012 nomination, which is what I was talking about.

I'm looking for a nominee who can form complete sentences,”

Now you are beginning to sound like that retarded skanky woman Joy Behar. That post of yours is a direct quote from her. Might I remind you that the New York Times never let's those who can't string "complete sentences" together, write opinion pieces in their newspaper, especially if the person writing the article is strongly conservative?

actually win a debate with a retard like Joe Biden,”

She already won the debate with Biden, with a very short time for preparation, and even with Biden having spent decades in the US Senate.

and get a daughter past the age of 17 and out of high school before getting knocked up.”

Even the Royal families of Europe, have had daughters get knocked up before they were 17, and their lineages still rule Europe as we speak

Oh, and who won't select someone to stand on her nominating stage just 12 months he decides to pose for Playgirl magazine. Just saying.”

Now you are showing your desperation. She didn't " chose" anyone fir her daughter. Her daughter chose the skank herself.
And # 2, if you want to talk about embarrassing family connections, why don't we start with Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton's notorious brothers eh? They happen to be related by blood, and have the same genes as those 2 presidents. Which is a more serious matter in my view.
And while we are about it, we might just take a look at the current president's drug dealing brother, and his illegal alien aunt.
None of that stopped any of the above gentlemen from occupying the White House did it, so why on earth should Sarah Palin's daughter getting herself knocked up, stop Sarah Palin from occupying the White House then?

"Clued in Freepers knew who she was."

And, precisely what percentage of Americans are "clued in Freepers"? You yourself made the point that no one who wasn't a die hard political junky knew who Geraldine Ferraro was. You can't have it both ways. "She already won the debate with Biden, with a very short time for preparation, and even with Biden having spent decades in the US Senate." "Even the Royal families of Europe, have had daughters get knocked up before they were 17, and their lineages still rule Europe as we speak"

When Prince Charles stands for US President, perhaps I'll begin to care what they do in Europe. Right now, I don't. I suggest you shouldn't either.

"Now you are showing your desperation. She didn't " chose" anyone fir her daughter. Her daughter chose the skank herself."

I didn't say she did. But, it was Sarah Palin who chose to let that dead-beat "baby daddy" in the convention, and on the stage. No one else. I thought it was inappropriate at the time, and it turns out I was correct.

This is what troubles me about Palin and her sycophantic army - she and they have an excuse for everything. Nothing is ever her own fault. Her two horrible interviews with Gibson & Couric was the fault of McCain handlers. Her teenage daughter's pregnancy was the fault of Levi Johnson. Her early resignation from Alaska was do to "mean democrats". etc., etc. etc.

I don't remember Ronald Reagan spending this much time attacking people when running for President.

Isn't it amusing the way you keep slithering all over the place and shifting ground?
Now why don't we look at exactly what you said before eh?
This is what you said, and I quote:
“No one knew who Sarah Palin was before that Friday in August when John McCain plucked her from obscurity. No one”

Your emphasis was on NO ONE.
So of course I pointed out to you that clued in Freepers knew about her long before McCain nominated her, and there had been plenty of threads about the conservative credentials of Sarah Plain right here on this board before McCain made his phone call.
So now you want to change to "percentage of Americans”?
Gee, why did you claim “no one” had heard of her to start off with then, dude? Why don't you try and be consistent eh?

Then perhaps you should start protesting over 0bama’s drug dealing, recently arrested brother then, because he happens to be related by blood to the president of the United States, with the same father, and his acts are embarrassing to the max to the office of the presidency, going by your standards.
Here is an idea, since bad behavior by presidential relatives or potential presidential relatives worry you so much, why don't you go take a sign and protest outside the White House eh? And hey? Send us pics of your protests will ya?

my female coworkers and friends do not like her at all and think she is dumb and doesn’t represent women well. Some are democrats while other are moderates. They get their information from media, which is the best source of information for most. I think this is a problem that Palin needs to address. Most women don’t spend time reading alternative online news coverage and just get whatever information from local news/mainstream news stations.

I know many of the same, and I agree... this is a HUGE problem for Sarah to overcome. Idiot women who get their "news" from Oprah, The View, Saturday Night Live and Matt Lauer on Good Morning America. And then they vote.

These shows are more powerful for shaping women's (stupid) opinions on politics, and other policy ie global warming than many people realize...

Goodness, you're an arrogant little thing. My point wasn't that I didn't know who she was. My point was that no one who wasn't a political enthusiast (outside of her sparsely populated state) knew who she was. You're either too stupid, or too disingenuous to acknowledge it.

But, it was Sarah Palin who chose to let that dead-beat “baby daddy” in the convention, and on the stage. . No one else. “

Shows what you know don't it?
As it happens, Sarah Palin did not even come close to controlling what went on in the the McCain campaign. As a matter of fact, the bozo Steve Schmidt had virtual veto power over everything. There have already been lots of posts here about the campaign, about occasions when Sarah Palin wanted to do something, and she was vetoed by Schmidt. Use the search button at the top of the page will ya?

This is what troubles me about Palin and her sycophantic army - she and they have an excuse for everything.”

This is what troubles me about the liberal media quoting, Keith Olberman quoting, Joy Baher quoting ankle biters like yourself: You spend your entire days posting discredited, disgusting anti-Palin trash on FR, and are ready to attack her over "issues" that you have are scared to attacked 0bama over for some reason.
You claim Sarah Palin’s daughter getting pregnant is embarrassing, yet have nothing to say about 0bozo’s brother getting arrested over drug dealing just a few months back.
It's a pretty pathetic way to spend one's time.

Nothing is ever her own fault”

Exactly what is she supposed to have done that was not her own fault? Being the most ethical governor in this country?

Her two horrible interviews with Gibson & Couric was the fault of McCain handlers”

The interviews have been discredited and are irrelevant. Her poll numbers have SHOT UP, despite those 2 interviews from over a year ago. I know that really causes you great pain, but you gotta be brave and take the pain, ok?
Meanwhile, I can show you more than 2 interviews fom 0bama from just b4 the surge in Iraq, in which every single thing 0bama said was totally wrong and utter rubbish, so why don't you go remove him from the White House, since you obsess over stupid interviews so much?

Her teenage daughter's pregnancy was the fault of Levi Johnson”

Her daughter's pregnancy was her daughter's decision. Do you know what your daughter is doing every minute of the day? (if you even have a daughter that is).
Millions of teenagers get pregnant in Europe and America every year.

“. Her early resignation from Alaska was do to “mean democrats”. etc., etc. etc.”

Resigning from office is about the best thing she ever did, if she really wants to run for president.
No way would she be riding a popular wave from her best selling book if she was still governor of Alaska.
Read this:
Sarah Palin did the right thing for her country by quitting
Tha Alaska Standard ^ | 01 December 2009 | Dan Fagan
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2399084/posts

And remember, the guy that wrote that article, Dan Fagan used to be in cahoots with the “Alaska Bloggers” in attacking Sarah Palin. Even he has seen the light, but then bottom feeders of your sought have just gotta keep pushing your loony left agenda don't ya?

I don't remember Ronald Reagan spending this much time attacking people when running for President”

I don't remember Ronald Reagan being put through the nasty, virulent, vicious , skanky, vile attacks that comes even close to what Sarah Palin has gone through. No politician on modern history has been attacked like Sarah Palin has, not just from the rancid, loony left media, but also from bottom feeding vermin of your sort. And all for for what?
Well for being one of the most ethical, and least corrupt governors this country has ever seen, for starters.
It's a very good thing she is hitting her vicious attackers back but good, and semding her poll numbers up. Conservatives don't like the liberal media and their loony left skanks anyways. The more she attacks them, the happier we are, and the stronger her support gets.

I think they share one significant thing in common - their respective public personas are owed completely to other men. In Hilary's case, it's her husband, and in Palin's case it's John McCain.

When a sitting Governor is the most popular public official in America and the most popular Governor in America, then you should be able to bring yourself to admit that she is self made.

As Palin lifted the McCain campaign and then maintained a greater leadership position after the election, it is clear again that she is the force, she is self made.
