Climate scientist James Hansen hopes summit will fail

A leading scientist acclaimed as the grandfather of global warming has denounced the Copenhagen summit on climate change next week as a farce.

James Hansen, the director of Nasa’s Goddard Insitute for Space Studies, told The Times that he planned to boycott the UN conference because it was seeking a counter-productive agreement to limit emissions through a “cap and trade” system.

“They are selling indulgences there. The developed nations want to continue basically business as usual so they are expected to purchase indulgences to give some small amount of money to developing countries. They do that in the form of offsets and adaptation funds.” he said.

Dr Hansen, 68, the fifth of seven children of an Iowa farmer, joined Nasa after taking his PhD to study Venus but changed course when he realised that man-made emissions were choking the atmosphere on his own planet.

He was one of the first voices to raise the alarm about rising global temperatures in the early 1980s, forecasting correctly that the planet would warm in the coming decades.

Hansen knows the end is near, and doesn’t want his name in lights at the bonfire.

Hansen says this is “our last chance” to save the planet, but we should wait a year. For what? To see if that cooling kicks in?

Exactly - he knows what anyone who hasn't had their head in dark regions since they were 15 years old of the 22 year cycle, pretty evenly divided between warmer years and cooler years...11 years solar maximum and 11 solar minimum (sun spots)

I've been around for several of them ;o) - It's due to start back into an 11 year warming cycle in 'a year ' or two from now. (But watch for sunspots. We'll need them if it's going to get warmer on schedule.)

We have to be sure to kill this GoreBull scheme NOW and educate people that it's the SUN - and sun spots or the lack thereof, that warms and cools in 11 year cycles...

If people don't realize this, we'll be plunged right back into the scheme...another reason it's vital we clean both houses in 2010

He’s bailing from the BIG, BIG spotlight on “Climate-Gate”

No, he's not. Please read the article before spewing.

Hansen just thinks Algore-style indulgences it the wrong way to fix AGW. He wants $1/gal going to government (his paymaster) now, with that amount increasing in the future. In that directed payback, this dog Hansen is just bringing a bone to his master.

[Hansen] changed course when he realised that man-made emissions were choking the atmosphere on his own planet

"Conjectured" would be the correct verb. If he would prove it scientifically--beyond just a theory, then it would qualify as "realized."

For example, there's lots of volcanic spew and other accumulated gases in the atmosphere that could interfere with Hansen's looking into the heavenly product of his Ph.D. activities.
