Ever speculate about having boiling tar poured on your skin? Ever speculate about trying to get if off?
It is as bad as any burn you could get and would probably kill you.

Originally tar and feathers was mostly naturally occurring asphalt and WAS NOT boiled. It was applied cold to humiliate the individual, not to injure them.
