Defense Attorney Hints at Army's Possible Conflicts of Interest Galligan said he is also concerned about the composition of the "Sanity Board," since it would be likely to include Army psychiatrists. Major Hasan is himself a psychiatrist, and his alleged actions have raised questions about his training and about whether warning signs were missed by the Army's medical personnel.

"The Army Asks If Major Nidal Hasan Is Insane"
Does anyone else find this headline strange???? I would assume the first thing one would conclude is that Major Hasan suffers from sociopathic psychosis. What we need to find out is if he knows the difference between right and wrong. In other words, he could be on the fifth ring of Saturn for the most part, but does he know it's wrong to kill? I'm just guessing he might be able to answer that in the affirmative.
The fact that he woke up from major injuryies sustained under traumatic circumstances and the first question that popped into his mind is whether he "killed anyone." Unless he can prove he thought he was killing "Mallomar Man," I'd say he "knew" in the strictest sense of the word that human beings were involved. He surely knew they would be unarmed, sitting ducks for a coward with a psychosis.

He is insane. Execute him anyway.

Maybe he’s “brain damaged” from the injuries incurred in his assault.
We’ve been told that rational people who do such things and then become vegetables pose a case where it’d be “cruel” to kill them since they don’t understand what is happening even though they were of sound mind when they committed the act.

That's the last thing I would assume or conclude.
Most people who adhere to wicked ideologies are not insane at all.
He subscribed to an ideology that sanctioned and praised mass murder. He went about telling people this and people shrugged and didn't believe him.
It's not insanity, it's a wicked ideology.
Know your enemy. If our Army assumes this is simple random insanity, they can't know and confront the problem. Same with the rest of us.

The Army wants to avoid to addressing the Islamist ideology that inspired him to commit mass murder.

The Manson family took large quantities of LSD, a drug known to induce psychosis, and listened to the rantings of a cultist. At some point, one must be responsible for his or her actions.
If they are to be deemed “unable to care for themselves”, then they need to be under a virtual house arrest and monitored 24/7 by a legal guardian.
We sure wouldn’t find these people who are on prescription anti-depresents buying a gun if they had to have a chaparone and an ankle bracelet.

Never date a psychology major. All psychiatrists are nuts. They choose that major because they have their own problems they can’t figure out. They think becoming a psychiatrist will straighten their own heads out.

The headlines weird, but I’d say this is a normal legal proceeding after a murderous rampage. Of course, all that we’ve heard would indicate he was a typical loser and loner who turned to a violent mass movement, as described in Eric Hoffer’s briliant book THE TRUE BELIEVER. That book describes the types of people who join causes to fill their otherwise meaningless lives, not out of civic responsibility, not out of concern for their neighbors, love of God, or nation, but to find meaning in their otherwise meaningless lives in a cause bigger than themselves. Islamists terrorists clearly fit that description.

Livius posted this on the thread regarding the charges brought. “He certainly knew that what he was doing was wrong, by any standards other than Islamic ones, so theoretically he doesn’t qualify for insanity; ...”. I think that is a very cogent statement of the situation.
To: Constitutions Grandchild
Insanity defenses rarely succeed in *civilian* courts.Somehow,I can't see a single one of the 12 (is it 12?) Army Officers who sit in judgement in this case will be fooled.
