'The Blind Side' writes a new playbook
Los Angeles Times ^ | 12/1/09 | By John Horn and Ben Fritz

Hollywood blockbusters aren't usually born in movie theaters in Dallas, Birmingham or Nashville. But that's exactly where “The Blind Side” has taken off -- a show-business phenomenon driven by audiences in the South and Midwest storming to a movie about Christian charity and football that stars Sandra Bullock.

In one of the more extraordinary box-office stories of the year, writer-director John Lee Hancock’s movie about Baltimore Ravens lineman Michael Oher -- who as a homeless black teen was taken in and nurtured by a well-off, churchgoing white couple -- nearly toppled the smash sequel "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" at multiplexes in both films' second weekend of release. Its ticket sales grew by 18% -- the first time this year that a movie in wide release saw its domestic gross grow on its second weekend -- while those for the teen vampire drama plummeted by 70%.

Reminds me of the stories I’ve heard about the 1970’s movie Walking Tall.

The ORIGINAL Walking Tall was a monster sleeper...the biggest surprise to Hollywood up to that point, I think...

Another good football movie with a Christian center is “Facing the Giants”. My church showed it on movie nite and it was great. It will make you cry and cheer. Rent it.

There is a scene where Sandra Bullock’s character says she is a Life Member of the NRA and hints that she is packing....

I sat there thinking...how did that get past Warner Bros?

It’s a chick flick with a football theme and Sandra Bullock, which men will not die of tortuous boredom when they take their wives and girlfriends to it. And because it’s postive and happy with an empowered woman who likes men, their wife/girlfriend will not be maudlin or angry with men by the time he gets her home.

SCORE!

So hell yes, it’s a big hit.

I’d put it up there with Remember The Titans.

I hope it’s as good as the book, which was excellent.

Reminds me of a comment on another thread about this movie comparing Sandra Bullock's character to another Smart, tough, and no nonsense ... the right glasses and an Alaska accent ...

Really, was your wife/girlfriend happy, romantic and frisky at the conclusion of that film? It was a good film, but not a date film. Too sad and poignant.

I rate films by the frisky factor. If I’m going to shell out cash for dinner and a movie, I do not want it to leave a sad or depressed/anxious or angry at men female on my hands.

Saw it because New Moon had sold out at our local theater. Loved it! And yes, I’m a white Catholic woman that lives in a small town in the South...so I guess I fit the profile.

I love “Facing The Giants”! You might also like “Flywheel” and “Fireproof,” which were also produced by the Kendrick Brothers and are very good. “Giants” is the best of the three, though, IMO.

alas, the Coming Attractions trailers told you all you need to know about where Hollywood is headed

-Avatar, new film from Titanic director James Cameron. Set in the future and appears to be about Space Marines who are dispatched to a walled-off Green Zone on a distant planet that is inhabited by a race of people who look like blue-skinned panthers. One of the Marines learns that the real objective of the mission is to obtain access by whatever means necessary to an ore on their planet that is worth “millions of dollars per kilo”. So he switches sides and fights with the cat people. (it’s all about BUSH’S WAR FOR OIL, see???)

- Dragons, a new animated feature about a mythical midieval town that is beset with random attacks by dragons. A young boy ventures out of the town and encounters an injured young dragon, whereupon he helps him and has his Androcles and the Lion moment. The dragon becomes his friend, but the townspeople persist in believing they are a threat and must all be destroyed. “Everything you think you know about them is wrong!” the boy protests. (translation: Quit picking on those poor Muslims!)

Oh, yeah. Hollywood is in full Obama spin mode.

Both films are true West Tennessee stories.
