Obama Admin OKs First Taxpayer-Funded Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Washington, DC -- The Obama administration today authorized the first study using embryonic stem cells paid for at taxpayer expense. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama issued an executive order overturning President Bush's limits preventing taxpayers from being forced to pay for the destruction of human life.

REAL science has proven that adult stem cell research does work. Not embryonic stem cell research.

Catholic Ping!

It was President Bush who first used federal funds for embryonic stem cell research. That's what started the landslide in this research. President Clinton to his credit may have legalized embryonic stem cell research but never authorized federal funds for it.

“And the US government takes yet another step further into illegitimacy.”

Yup, with the signature of our most beloved King Barry.

This is another nail in the coffin for this bozo. Hope we can ride this disaster for 3 more years.

George Daley of Children's Hospital Boston, submitted 11 of the 13 lines and the other two come from the lab of Ali Brivanlou at Rockefeller University in New York.

In comments about the funding, Daley called the human beings "low-grade" human embryos who were rejected for fertility treatments, and then donated by couples for research.

Wonder what he and Tiller will talk about during their breaks?

From your article:

“I have concluded that we should allow federal funds to be used for research on these existing stem cell lines, where the life and death decision has already been made.”

“...I will also name a President’s council to monitor stem cell research, to recommend appropriate guidelines and regulations, and to consider all of the medical and ethical ramifications of biomedical innovation..”

I don’t see where he specifically approves federal funding for ongoing Embryonic Stem Cell research....am I missing something?

The funds were only for EXISTING lines of cells and limited to those lines only. President Bush did not start any landslide. BDS syndrome anyone?

Follow the money!

The phrase works in negative (ClimateGate) and positive situations. The venture capital community directs the bulk of its investments at adult stem cells. They're in the business of making money not political statements. If you're trying to ride the embryonic stem cell train to fame and fortune and can't attract private $$$$, head to the gov't - they'll believe anything.

Calling all Bishops....calling all Bishops....perhaps now you can write a voters’ guide that the people in the pews can understand. Something boiled down to bullet points instead of 13 weeks of 4 page mumbo jumbo.

” I have concluded that we should allow federal funds to be used for research on these existing stem cell lines,”

Yes there were a few existing lines and a small amount of research but federal funds are the lifeblood of large scale research. There was almost no embryonic stem cell research prior to this because it was restricted to private/corporate funds. I remember when the storm hit the science journals. I was surprised that so many scientists knew so little about it. There was no doubt that the scientists writing in were salivating over the prospects of a budget large enough for labs, students and projects. I’ve never seen such speculation in a journal about what MIGHT be done.

At the time I think most people expected that the restrictions to the few existing lines was temporary. The important part was the federal (read unrestricted) funding. The regulations that come after that are easy to change.

“And Obama took away all funding for ADULT stem cell research!!!!”

That’s OK, private industry will fund ADULT stem cell research because it WORKS!

Oh, what’s that? Obama has effectively done away with private industry? Nevermind...

Don't count on it.

I keep sending my own guides to any who will read/listen... including the bishops.

Of course, all of us prolifers know about this:

‘NOTHING could have prepared me for what happened next as Dr. Oz, unbelievably and without prelude or warning, makes the stunning statement:

“I think, Oprah, the stem cell debate is dead.”

“The problem with embryonic stem cells is that embryonic stem cells come from embryos, like all of us are made from embryos, and those cells can become any cell in the body, but it’s very hard to control them and so they can become cancer.”’

excerpt http://repairstemcell.wordpress.com/oprah-michael-j-fox-dr-oz-stem-cell-debate-is-dead/

But it doesn’t count with Obama, unless you kill human life, and he’s doing it with our tax dollars.

He also took away tax dollars used for nonembryonic research which are the stem cells that WORK!
