'Steven Seagal: Lawman' full of possibilities
SF Gate ^ | 02 dec 09 | Tim Goodman

You can be excused for thinking that "Steven Seagal: Lawman" is another in the action movie star's canon of B-movies. You know, the kind of film where breaking bones with martial arts and aiming to kill (and succeeding) are part of the script.

But for most people, finding out that Seagal has been a real-life deputy for nearly 20 years in the Jefferson Parish sheriff's office in Louisiana might come as a mind-rattling shock. The beefy tough guy is not just a martial arts expert who has helped train officers while being a member of their force, he's also an expert marksman who has worked with the parish's SWAT team.

Tonight at 10, you can see him in uniform as A&E presents a "Cops"-style reality series called "Steven Seagal: Lawman." What makes this series so compelling is the fact that so few people knew Seagal was doing this - and that the actor never used it for publicity even when his career could have used a boost.

So, why now? Here's what Seagal said in the A&E press notes: "I've been working as an officer in Jefferson Parish for two decades under most people's radar. I've decided to work with A&E on this series now because I believe it's important to show the nation all the positive work being accomplished here in Louisiana - to see the passion and commitment that comes from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in this post-Katrina environment."

I never knew Seagal was a real cop. I saw the previews on TV and figured he must've been "deputized" just for the show. Could be interesting.

I had no idea...I actually might watch this show now knowing that he’s the real thing and not just posing.

Although Seagal is hardly worthy of the title “actor”, according to friends who are into martial arts he is a serious athlete, and a big guy to boot. As a law enforcement officer, I’m sure he’s quite effective.

I’m not sure if that is a bullet proff vest or a hernia truss.

His early movie trademark move was to break his opponents arm.

That has since been removed in some of his later films.

Good to know that he does some things to assist law enforcement and as stated never used this for publicity purposes.

I wonder how many folks just bow up on him, trying to prove a point... just how bad of an ass whipping they can take before he hauls ‘em to jail?

Steven Segal was good in his early movies. It is hard to have a star become a caricature of his former self.

I wish him well in this project. We all change in ways as we age, he has especially.

Martial experts are seldom heavy... Like most athletes.

I did not know this either. I did enjoy a few of his movies.

“Out For Justice”
“Under Siege”
“Executive Decision” Although he was killed early in this movie.

I think the whole premise of this show is a load of crap.

I remember reading things about Seagal 10 years ago, which maintained that the guy was always lying about what he did and was always trying to make people believe he was some sort of super scary secret agent who just did acting on the side. He would tell you what he really did, but then he would have to kill you, unless you were A&E.

He's a bloated goofball.

Here’s another tidbit. I was perusing a CD store a few years back and came across a Steven Seagal blues CD. He sings and plays guitar on it. I didn’t buy it, but I scanned it on one of those listening machines and listened to a few tunes. It wasn’t bad.

This should be cool.

I was related to the Sheriff who gave him his badge and met Seagal at a dinner a short while back. . . but I still didn’t know it was an official police position.

They should have a reality pirate show. He could go as an undercover cook on a US cargo ship in Somalia. "I'm just a cook." -Under Seige IV

I am only interested if he bags that idiot Mayor of NO., His Honor, Fanagel Nagel.

Impersonating a Public Official would be a good charge to start with.
