OCOEE, Fla. -- Ocoee police are still searching for the gunman who ambushed a business owner and shot his wife near their home off Lake Johio Road late Tuesday night.

Investigators told Eyewitness News the suspected shooter waited until the victims arrived at the front gate of the Willows on the Lake subdivision in Ocoee and tried to rob them of their bank deposit bag.

Ocoee police could not track down the suspect with their dogs or helicopter, but they believe surveillance cameras at several nearby businesses and at the Chase Bank next to the subdivision's entrance may have captured the brazen crook on video.

Investigators say a married couple, both in their forties, pulled up to the gate of their subdivision off Silver Star Road around 11:30pm Tuesday night after working at the store they own in Pine Hills.

That is when a man dressed in all black and wearing a red mask ambushed the couple when the husband lowered his window to enter the gate code.

A happy ending but the bad guy is still loose. Chalk another one up to gun ownership.

Well, semi-happy ending. His wife got shot in the shoulder and he didn’t have time to get off a shot at the perp.

Maybe his wife should take lessons, so they are each carrying one of the guns next time. In fact, since there were two guns in the car, maybe that was the idea.

It also makes you wonder about these places where people need to live in gated communities because it’s unsafe to live outside of them.

True thinking a gated subdivision will make you safe is like thinking a white line in the street will stop a car from hitting you.

Bad guy figure out money is in the millionaires gated community. There goes the ball game. And here comes a lot of support for gun ownership.

I lived in a gated apartment complex for a year. Tall, pointy-tipped fence all around it.
Woke up at 3AM once, glanced outside, and watched two guys hop over that “security” like it wasn’t there.
Between that, and once working for a company where a guard stuffed a body into the air conditioning cooling tower, I have zero faith in “security” provided by others.

Bad guy figure out money is in the millionaires gated community.

Willie Sutton was asked why he always robbed banks. He replied, "That's where the money is." This guy did the same calculation.

All too often, those in gated communities think crime is "the Common Peoples' problem." Reality bites.
