Lots and lots of half-hearted, slow-motion clapping out there for the president's speech. Lots of "yes...but...." It's a war no one loves. Obama says it's not a quagmire, just, well, a steaming morass of boot-sucking muck that we will endeavor to escape as soon as humanly possible. He assured us that this escalator leads right to the Exit. We're surgin' on out of that place.
Lurking in this speech was something that might be called the Obama doctrine. I'm no expert on this sort of thing and will eagerly await the analysis of those who crunch doctrines for a living. But what I heard is a president saying that wars have to be seen in the context of everything else, including the economy. Wars don't get a blank check. Wars don't get to operate off-budget, as though they're in a parallel universe. Sometimes a limited war, in pursuit of narrowly defined goals, is all we can afford. Obama was quite explicit about his belief that nation-building should begin at home. In front of a military audience the president spoke at length about the economy that is the true foundation of our superpower status.
(snip Obama text)
Wow. That's a clear departure from the standard war speech, no? Because the standard rhetoric for the commander in chief is to talk of paying any price and bearing any burden; of victory at all cost. But when Obama speaks of "the price of these wars," he's not being metaphorical. He is saying: Even a war has to pencil out.

In what respect?

“I did a photo op with cadets behind me and went to Dover. I know what I am talking about”
you don’t know nothing. You wanted your photo ops to give bonafides and it rings hollow.
“Let’s go to Afghanistan “sometime” next year but, let’s pull our guys out 18 months later”.
Why the slow deployment? Why not do it now? Surely the Uniteds States Military can drop 30,000 troops anywhere in the world on a moments notice. What are you waiting for?
Pull out in 18 months? That’s great. Why don’t you go to the contestants and show them your play book and the possibilities. Maybe they will lie low for 18 months and then you can presume victory.
Surely, they won’t 6 months later resume aggressive hostilities, will they?
Great plan. We want to crush them but not defeat them. Okay?
Maybe I should change my mind on this and say let’s pull out but the strategic interest are to high. However, from a political point of view why not? We can alway re-engage with the next leader of this great country and finish it.
Just as we did in Iraq, when we let Sadaam stay in power and it cost us dearly. We ultimately finished the job 12 years later.
I suppose we will have to do the same in Afghanistan.
At what cost and why? Is it necessary?
“O” is the living, breathing epitome of the bedrock Liberal premise that you CAN have it both ways, despite flawed reasoning, absence of fact and glaring inconsistencies, and still go UNCHALLENGED by the American public who will swallow it whole!!
Thanks NEA!!
Oh, the brave old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.
And when they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only half way up,
They were neither up nor down.
General George S Patton
I wish Charlie Gibson would explain what the ‘Obama Doctrine’ is...
Obama is obviously channeling Winston Churchill. Wasn’t that the tone Churchill was adopting in his speeches about May and June of 1940? Resist the Germans, yes, but don’t lose sight of the impact on the economy.
