Recruit's tattoo on saluting arm becomes a problem

Wednesday, December 02, 2009
By Sadie Gurman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A tattoo that passed muster when Kayla Bresnan was sworn into the U.S. Air Force in April might now keep her from service thanks to a rule quietly implemented last week.

On Monday, the day before she was to ship out to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio for basic training, she was told by an Air Force official that the 3-inch-by-3-inch theatrical mask on her "saluting arm" is no longer acceptable. He called a cab and sent her back to her Greensburg recruiting office.

"I qualified in every aspect, I passed all my physical exams," said Ms. Bresnan, 19, of Penn Township, Westmoreland County. "It's just a huge let-down. This was my dream."

So will people who don't want to serve just have to get a tatoo of ...ummm...say a middle finger or political statement on their saluting arm?

Obviously that was ALREADY banned but wouldn't it have been better to keep the old rules instead of waking a sleeping dog? This could get publicity.

I can't see it ending well.

All things in time bro:

revolted, resisted, fought, held fast, maintained, destroyed resistance, overcome coercion. The right to be a person, some one or individual. We applaud his private war, and concede that despite materialistic efforts, he has survived intact.

Sounds weird to me. When I went through my recruit physical, I was examined from top to toe. They wanted all and any information on birthmarks, scars and tattoos, all the way down to a half-inch monkey bite on my left index finger.

If she was passed and sworn in, I think they have an obligation to keep her.

I think that the military rules on tattoos is getting a bit out of hand. There were many 4.0 sailors that I served with who had sleeves.

That’s why I chose a lower back tattoo. Won’t be seen at work.

I got a patriotic tattoo after 9/11. I wanted a patriotic symbol that would be permanent, unlike the American flags that most people took down as soon as the memory of 9/11 faded enough.

Changing rules in the middle of the game complicates matters.

I have several tattoos however I know now that they are unacceptable to many places and people so I have to bear through and “go with the flow” so to speak.

This may be part of an AF realignment (finding a reason to turn some away). An Air Force Junior Officer I work with said the AF is offering incentives to leave prior to the completion of their agreed upon obligation.

It seems to me that because of where it's located, it wouldn't really be seen during a proper salute.

Well, sucks for her. Can’t really find any sympathy for her though. Never understood the purpose of getting a tattoo. If you want one, that’s your business, but IMO, it is stupid and pointless. Kinda like starting smoking or joining a gang. Why? To what benefit?

If you don’t impress people with your natural appearance, do you really think a tat will change that? Why don’t you buy a new red 80K Viper...and then pour a can of grey paint over the roof. Makes about as much sense, and you’ll turn more heads.

Ah well. S’pose it’s better then wearing earrings in holes punched in your face, or putting a hole in your earlobe the size of an orange like some of the freaks around town do.

Jill! Right on. I thought wanted one a decade ago, but decided to wait 3 years, and sure enough, after 3 years I didn’t really want it.

Hot little number. Shame, it really is. She can cry on my shoulder anytime.

Hope she gets it removed and gets back in.

And I never understood self-righteous people that don’t have tattoos passing judgment on those that do.
