In the art-auction world, the trick to selling a bad painting is to put it in a terrific frame. That's the logic behind President Obama's West Point speech tonight.
Condemned by his own vacillation to sketching a picture repulsive to multiple constituencies, Obama will use the impressive frame of West Point to lend his remarks an illusion of glorious leadership.
The event will be impressive: The US Military Academy does pomp and circumstance well. The cadets will be immaculate and perfectly behaved, applauding on cue (no Joe Wilson "You lie!" shout-outs from this hyper-disciplined bunch).

He forgot to say, that the first message will be, that it’s “Bush’s fault.”
I’ll never forget a high school history book I had, with a picture of LBJ giving a speech. The caption stated that towards the end of his term, the only place he could give speeches without being heckled was military bases.
The Messiah’s latest venues: Osan (good backdrop) Air Base, Ft Hood, now West Point.
“He forgot to say, that the first message will be, that its Bushs fault.”
You’re Right! Chances are high that he won’t be able to resist. In fact, he’ll have to say that to quell unrest in the looney lft over a troop increase.
My condolences to the cadets.
They also get a ‘guaranteed’ crowd...there will be no opting of attending.
Why can’t this man stay in the WH? The Oval Office, no crowd. Everything with this man has to have some sort of backdrop. I have never in my life have been so horrified by anyone like this person and his cohorts.
I think we’re going to hit minus 16 this week, and it’s going to be from the left denouncing him.
I’m basically your average hawk when it comes to defense, but I feel very nervous about our mission in Afghanistan...THis has all the red flags and trappings of another Viet Nam political mess ala LBJ.
The article by Michael Moore yesterday was actually on the mark. AFter today, this is Obama’s war and he is a war president.
Look for the left to scold him in the polls. He could easily hit minus 20....
GOOD BYE HEALTH CARE....GOOD BYE CAP AND TRADE...
He’s wagging the dog. He will apologize for sending troops.
Pray for America and Our Troops
Military bases would be the first place this guy WOULD be heckled if the military were allowed to speak their mind.
Gibbs just said on FOX [paraphrased] that the type of process used to determine the Afghan strategy has not been done in past 9 years.
Gibbs is on F&F right now saying pretty much that.
The three months of “intense deliberations” that Zippy just went through with his advisors were “unlike anything that had been done in the previous nine years.”
That’s right, Gibbs. Brag about all the yack-yack that you Obamanoids have been doing since last summer while brave troops have been getting killed in A’stan not knowing what government policy or the plan for the war would really be.
The same with Nixon.
But at least he and LBJ were reasonably respected by the troops. Zer0 has to screen the personnel to be admitted to his military speech venues - only Obama voters admitted.
The jerk and his handlers are scared to death of booing and heckling. That is why they had Pujols act as catcher when Zer0 girlishly tossed out the first pitch in Saint Louis rather than Molina, who would be the normal choice. After all, Pujols is the most popular man in town and sure to draw cheers that would drown out the anti-Obama jeering.
West Point = Greek Columns
His handlers know that Hussein has no value except as a mouthpiece, so they try to play it up to the max by creating dramatic backgrounds for his speeches.
It’s all for naught - people inside the US and out are getting sick of it. Staying in the WH, as you suggest, and showing a bit of humility would be helpful to the Pretender.
But he is not about to take advice from anybody on FR, thank God!
I saw that and hurled my slipper at the TV (I didn't want to break the screen).
I’m not a believer in reincarnation but the parallels between Il Duce and Le Douchebag are pretty startluing, not only the poses and windy speechmaking but the fascist policies as well.
Mussolini called his philosophy “corporatism” and that seems to be what Hussein believes in as well...big, intrusive government and state capitalism where businessmen retain ostensible control but take their marching orders from the government.
It is the most disgusting comment I have heard so far.
Now he’s going to befoul West Point.
