There is a scene in Star Trek Enterprise where T'Pol is faced with using force to apprehend a fugitive who has given her a sob-story to persuade her to let him escape. Captain Archer tells her "you were sent to capture him, not to judge him."

By commuting the felon's sentence "down" to 47 years, allowing the parole board to grant parole, then-Governor Huckabee bought into the sob-story told him by the felon's family. He felt he was being merciful. But instead, he is indirectly responsible for the cold-blooded murder of four cops.

T'Pol listened to Archer and shot the fugitive (phase pistol on stun). It's too bad Huckabee listened to his merciful side. He basically judged that this violent felon would stop being violent.

Sorry Huck. It's not your place to judge. That was the job of the jury, whose sentence you overturned. It's time to accept responsibility for what you did, apologize for it, and return to the ministry. Your time as a politician has ended.

Actually as Gov it is his job to make clemency determinations. He just chose extremely poorly on this and other occasions.

No, your writing is flawed. Huckabee didn’t grant parole. A parole board had to decide if clemmons was ELIGIBLE/QUALIFIED for parole. Not Huckabee...what huckabee did, was give the case a chance by a parole board to decide IF the man qualified or not.

Without Huckabee’s stupid decision Clemmon’s would never have had a chance to do all the disgusting things he’s done. Including killing four police officers. Those are just facts regardless of whether you want to accept them or not.

My money is on the politician being the liar.

In any case, I find it difficult to believe that the prosecutor was not in the loop. If the felon petitioned the court to commute sentence the prosecutor would by virtue of the process be involved.

Unless there was a colossal break down of the system, there is no way that Huckabee can sustain that the prosecutor offered no opinion. Saying the only government entity he heard from was the judge just doesn’t pass the common sense test. To me, it is telling that Huckabee did not say that the prosecutor offered no opinion or supported sentence communtation. In this case, IMHO opinion and given the criminal history of this person, there is no way the prosecutor would have given no opinion or recommended the sentence be commuted.

Huckabee is lying. Fortunately he has been revealed for who he is well in advance of the next presidential campaign. Huckabee has had his Dukakis moment.
