Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah): Bring home Afghan troops
Politico ^ | November 29, 2009 | By DANIEL LIBIT

Saying it’s time for Republicans to do more than “take pot shots at ACORN,” freshman Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz will call on President Barack Obama on Monday to bring U.S. troops home from Afghanistan.

Chaffetz’s push for a troop withdrawal — to be unveiled in a speech at the Hinckley Institute of Politics in Salt Lake City — runs counter to the position of House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and other leading Republicans in Congress. But it also reflects the divisions within the conference about the question of Afghanistan. Chaffetz told POLITICO the issue “has been probably the most difficult one as a freshman in the minority.”

“So much of this is easy, black and white, but Afghanistan is very different and very difficult,” he said.

Chaffetz said he thinks he will “suffer” for the decision and that it would be safer for him politically to stay the course he’s been on.

“I can take pot shots at [Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now] all day long, and I’m good at it,” Chaffetz said. “But even though I am probably going against where the party is on this traditionally, I just think we need to stand up and support the notion that it is time to bring our soldiers home.”

Some medieval guys in robes living in caves are not about to "conquer the world."

Tell that to the 3,000 dead on 9/11.

His first and last term. Bye, Bye, Mr. Bigshot Idiot.

They said the same thing about Ron Paul and he was easily reelected even when dozens of pro-war Republicans went down in flames in 2006 and 2008. Do you really think the fine people of Utah will punish him for failing to support Obama's War?

Yes, they launched a successful terrorist operation but “conquer the world.” Again, let’s get real.

I am very disappointed in the Hinckley Institute.

These elites are trying to hard to be middle of the road moderates. Instead they are just a bunch of elitist Mugwumps.

If you want to support Obama's War, that is your right

It is not Obama's War, it is America's war.

I support victory.

Good question. We’ll have to wait and see. My take is that he is such a lightweight that he will be looked at very closely.

Bring home Afghan troops

We are going to be seeing this rallying cry from the anti-wars. They are turning on the man-child illegally sleeping in the WH. I expect his polls to continue their slide. Whether the GOP can grab onto this during 2010 remains to be seen. The GOP has not been successful in standing up to the RAT party, and I almost half expect them to screw up the next election also.

. Wrong! Obama is the commander-in-chief and he has chosen to escalate....therefore he own's it. Rather than withdraw, he has embraced it. It is now "his" war just as much as it is "his" health insurance proposal and his stimulus. Stand up salute! I'm sure he'll be grateful.

It is America's War. Our troops are fighting for their country, no matter who the occupant in the White House is.

To undercut them during a time of war, as Ron Paul and Chaffetz does, is disgraceful. I expect that sort of nonsense from Democrats, but from Republicans it is shameful.

Being an isolationist is not only shortsighted to dealing with current world threats, but very foolish.

“I just think that instead of saying that the war is lost and we need to pull out, he should say lets change the damn rules of engagement and let our guys kick ass or get the hell out. “

The ROE needs to be publicly attacked.

Barring a change in the ROE our soldiers should not be fighting with tied hands.

While others have valid reasons for us to stay in Afghanistan, I can see no positive results for us in a war when the commander-in-chief is Barack 0bama.
The purpose is a good and honorable one. 0bama will not accomplish it.
Meanwhile, bordering Afghanistan, there is a muslim country that possesses nuclear weapons. Nobody seems very alarmed about that right now, but eventually it’s going to be catastrophic.
We can expect 0bama to make it catastrophic that much sooner.

If Chaffetz really wants to help our troops and American success, then he should be saying this about ROE, hammering Obama and Dems, instead of caving and supporting withdrawal.

I would refer him to the Pacifica archives, where Amy Goodman had on a guest (a self-admitted Lib and policy analyst of some sort) who insisted that Obama would not....COULD not leave Afghanistan. Goodman seemed incredulous to his answers as he rattled off a whole list of geopolitical strategic security reasons why it could not be done. Among them the dirty little secret that our allies in Europe and Asia would actually s**t a brick if they thought we were really about to bug out.

“...The ROE needs to be publicly attacked...”

I agree but there is another whole dimension to the Afghan theatre.

The constitution recognizes no law higher than Mohammedan Sharia. We should never have allowed such a constitution to be adopted after ousting the Taliban. Now we have a situation where our troops are fighting to preserve a Mohammedan state that is currently less radical than the Taliban but that could change without a Taliban return. Our troops are not allowed to discuss Christ with Afghans.

And this is the situation Bush built.
