Saying its time for Republicans to do more than take pot shots at ACORN, freshman Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz will call on President Barack Obama on Monday to bring U.S. troops home from Afghanistan.
Chaffetzs push for a troop withdrawal to be unveiled in a speech at the Hinckley Institute of Politics in Salt Lake City runs counter to the position of House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and other leading Republicans in Congress. But it also reflects the divisions within the conference about the question of Afghanistan. Chaffetz told POLITICO the issue has been probably the most difficult one as a freshman in the minority.
So much of this is easy, black and white, but Afghanistan is very different and very difficult, he said.
Chaffetz said he thinks he will suffer for the decision and that it would be safer for him politically to stay the course hes been on.
I can take pot shots at [Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now] all day long, and Im good at it, Chaffetz said. But even though I am probably going against where the party is on this traditionally, I just think we need to stand up and support the notion that it is time to bring our soldiers home.

All you need to know....Club for Growth rates Chaffetz at 100%. The guy is no RINO. Actually, he got elected by running to the right of a RINO in the primary - he then went on to win the general.
It is “defeatist” to undermine our national defense morale by getting deeper into Obama’s Afghan rathole. Finally, a Republican (other than Ron Paul) comes out against Obama’s War. Thus far, the GOP has been Obama’s best friend on that fiasco!
A lot of folks here think that if you’re against Obama’s War that you’re a RINO. The precise opposite is the case. Those who defend Obama’s War are the real RINO’s
So I take it he’s been an avid supporter of Mitt Romney and Meg Whitman?
I can find nothing in this statement with which I disagree. Good for him.
I would prefer to stay the course, expecting it to take 20+ years of some level of commitment.
If America isn’t willing to do that - and I doubt we are - then pulling the troops may be a good idea. Like our betrayal of Vietnam, it will have long-lasting and bad impacts on our nation, but I don’t know why we should continue for a little while if we are not willing to finish the job.
FWIW - I did 6 months in Afghanistan in 2007, and my son leaves for there this spring.
Some people simply have no vision or resolve. Afghanistan is nothing to play with here. This is no “political” war. These thugs are seeking to get nukes as fast as they can.
If we pull out of Afghanistan, all the free world is toast. We still have Iran to deal with too.
Afghanistan was no mistake. Anyone who quote Kerry in positive light is a coward.
Can we say hyperbole? A few thousand medieval Taliban in caves (who have never attacked the U.S. ) are not about to accomplish this goal. Let's get real. The biggest threat to the free world is looming bankruptcy because of an unsustainable world policing foreign policy. How do you intend to pay for the escalation in Obama's War? We're broke.
No, Romney and Whitman are for Obama's War. He sounds like a Ron Paul supporter.
It will become a mistake if we cut and run like we did in Vietnam. I was not quoting Kerry in a positive light. The point is that unless we are committed to winning in Afghanistan and provide our forces with the resources necessary to do the job, then it is a disgrace to ask an American to sacrifice his life in vain. Win or get out.
As a Vietnam veteran who served a year in-country (including during the Tet Offensive) and another 8 months off of the coast, I do not want Americans to be put in harms way without the full support of our political leadership and with the tools necessary to do the job. Let's see what Obama says tomorrow night. I suspect he will try to have it both ways, which is not the message to send to our troops and to the enemy. Are you insinuating that I am a coward?
This isn’t courageous, it is defeatist. He damages our already low troop moral by being a defeatist. Cowards like this make me sick
Cowards?
An American sees that our men and women in uniform are being wasted because our so called leaders lack a spine and our society in general is clueless about the muslim threat and what needs to be done and this makes him a doward? As a veteran who dail;y is active in support of our current troops and our veterans, my view has become one that if we lack the courage to fight the muslims as we did the nazi and the japaness in WW2 then we should get the heck out and stop wasting lives....
This guy is running in my district!!! I can’t wait to get rid of Ron Klein.
So... I presumed incorrectly that someone who attended Mitt Romney’s alma mater, Brigham Young University, would have campaigned vigorously for him?
I really don’t know. Could be. I do know that Paul got a lot of support in Utah....though I’m not sure how much it was Mormon.
[How do you intend to pay for the escalation in Obama’s War?]
By cutting all these stupid domestic give-aways! The US Constitution says that the one thing the government should be funding (above all others - IMO) is our defense! The rest is just fluff and crap!
Plan and simple. Stop giving away money to all the lazy people here that don’t want to get a job! Stop paying for people’s houses and cars and food and (soon-to-be) insurance and ... do I need to continue? If the US would spend money on what is SHOULD and SUPPOSED to, then we would have MORE than enough money to win this war!
Compare the 2009 USA to the 1939 Great Britain: Britain kept telling every nation that Germany was getting ready for war. Even after Germany invaded Poland, no one wanted to believe Britain, even after terrorizing nearly half of Europe, the US didn’t want to get involved (and there were Americans who were vocally AGAINST Britain)! That is the same as our war with radical Islam! Not until these tyrants are actively engaging these other countries in open combat will the rest of the world wake up and admit that there is a problem with these radical islamic nutjobs!
We need to fight, we need to fight to win, and we need to DESTROY them, their infrastructure and their financing (in whatever country helps subsidize them)!!!
If we are not going to fight to win (such an ugly word to our Pres__ent) then YES, we need to get out and expect to get attacked again - next time worse than 9/11 and possibly with NUKES! That is NOT hyperbole, that is reality!
And have the terrorists spread like locusts and conquer the world as a result? No thanks.
Terrorists will have to be defeated now or later. But we will have to deal with them ultimately. Later, though, means even more lives will be lost because of our inaction today.
The correct thing to do is to fight Obama and Dems on this issue, and by extension, supporting our troops in their efforts.
Some medieval guys in robes living in caves are not about to "conquer the world." The remnants of Al Qaeda, which is virtually destroyed, is not even in Afghanistan anymore. It is U.S. allied Pakistan, being protected (indirectly at least) courtesy of our tax money. If you want to support Obama's War, that is your right.....but this hyperbole is simply not believable.
