Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah): Bring home Afghan troops
Politico ^ | November 29, 2009 | By DANIEL LIBIT

Saying it’s time for Republicans to do more than “take pot shots at ACORN,” freshman Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz will call on President Barack Obama on Monday to bring U.S. troops home from Afghanistan.

Chaffetz’s push for a troop withdrawal — to be unveiled in a speech at the Hinckley Institute of Politics in Salt Lake City — runs counter to the position of House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and other leading Republicans in Congress. But it also reflects the divisions within the conference about the question of Afghanistan. Chaffetz told POLITICO the issue “has been probably the most difficult one as a freshman in the minority.”

“So much of this is easy, black and white, but Afghanistan is very different and very difficult,” he said.

Chaffetz said he thinks he will “suffer” for the decision and that it would be safer for him politically to stay the course he’s been on.

“I can take pot shots at [Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now] all day long, and I’m good at it,” Chaffetz said. “But even though I am probably going against where the party is on this traditionally, I just think we need to stand up and support the notion that it is time to bring our soldiers home.”

“Have you ever been in the military?”

Have you?

No...and I’ve never been to Afghanistan either but that doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion about military and foreign policy. Now....that I have answered your question please address my contention that the military is the leading socialist entity in the U.S., bar none. Am I wrong, and, if so, why? If you want to play word games, however, let’s not waste each other’s time. Just let me know if you want a serious discussion.

that we take no prisoners. Anyone who shoots at us is dead either through combat or a summary execution upon capture.

The Soviets tried that too. They also slaughtered a lot of civilians. Why do you think you'll be more successful

You never served in the military, yet you make the claim that they are the “leading socialist entity” in the U.S.?

Shows just how little you know since you make the claim without even one shred of evidence.

The leading “socialist entities” in this country are the public school systems, followed by the vast majority of the colleges and universities.

Those are followed by various government agencies such as Health and Human Services, HUD, etc, etc.

Where did I say anything about slaughtering civilians?

I didn’t! Just pointed out that the Soviets went “all out.” You keep looking for excuses to play word games! Again, if you want a serious discussion about the merits our respective cases, get back to me.

A mere shadow of socialism compared to the military. Let's be objective here. In the military, EVERYTHING, including health care, housing, and food, is sold either by the government or government contractors.

YOU were the one who brought up the slaughtering of civilians, and it is YOU who is now playing word games.

You saying that I’m not being objective? ROFLMAO!!!!

How about practicing what you preach. Not that I expect a ron paul supporter to be capable of doing that especially since your heerow is incapable of doing so himself.

You NEVER served DAY ONE in the military thus making you the LEAST objective person to make any sort of opinion about anything dealing with the military.

Nice purple prose. Now...that you got that out of your system. Could you please respond to the specific claims in my last post? Thanks!

What “specific” claims?

Oh, you mean that uninformed anti-military BS you spewed about the military being “socialist”?

Let me try again. I asserted that the military is the most socialist institution in the U.S. My evidence is that provides the full gamut of housing, health care, food, and even child care through government agencies or contractors. I ask again: What are your counterarguments to these specific points?

The government doesn’t provide child care to the military. The only thing that even comes close are schools, which stateside they’re run by the local school districts with exception to overseas.

As far as food, and housing is concerned, if you add the pittance of allowances together with the base pay the military is still under paid when compared to their civilian “counterparts”.

A civilian isn’t on the clock 24/7

A civilian isn’t subject to living “in the field” for weeks or months at a time.

A civilian isn’t subject to having someone pound on your door at 3am and telling you to grab your gear we’re being deployed.

A civilian doesn’t have to worry about snipers, and IED’s

A civilian isn’t subject to daily physical and mental stresses as found in military training or actual combat.

I bet that you would whine about having to use cold water to bathe with, followed by a cold meal and you’d sure as hell whine if you were having to pull watch at an OP/LP at 2am.

But it’s easier for cowardly little INGRATES like you who don’t have the balls to even serve in the military to hide behind your little keyboard and call the military (and by extension every military veteran) “socialists”

BTW, my tag line is specifically targeted at ungrateful people like YOU.

Excuse me, but the Constitution says clearly the government "shall raise, support and maintain" standing armies and the Navy.

What do you think "support" means? Or "maintain"?

Since the military is one of only two government services provided for in the Constitution (the other being the post office), your "socialist" comments are ridiculous.
