Mr. Mann is fighting for his career, if he admits to fraud he’s through and might even face financial ruin.
I wouldn’t expect him to capitulate very quickly on this- even if he isn’t a zealot.

Ah yes, the standard refrain of the naughty lib with his hand caught in the cookie jar. When will people see past this?

This Nixonian “I am not a crook” stance won’t work any better than it did 35 years ago...

Skimmed through the emails today and found this gem from Michael Mann:

Hi Phil,
lets not get into the topic of hate mail. I promise you I could fill your inbox w/ a very long list of vitriolic attacks, diatribes, and threats I've received.
Its part of the attack of the corporate-funded attack machine, i.e. its a direct and highly intended outcome of a highly orchestrated, heavily-funded corporate attack campaign.
We saw it over the summer w/ the health insurance industry trying to defeat Obama's health plan, we'll see it now as the U.S. Senate moves on to focus on the cap & trade bill that passed congress this summer.
It isn't coincidental that the original McIntyre and McKitrick E&E paper w/ press release came out the day before the U.S. senate was considering the McCain Lieberman climate bill in '05.
we're doing the best we can to expose this. I hope our Realclimate post goes some ways to exposing the campaign and pre-emptively deal w/ the continued onslaught we can expect over the next month . . .

Ya think Mann might have voted for Obama?

I wonder if there are any evolutionists who worry about what this may mean for public attitudes toward “science” in other areas.

Once upon a time a friend of mine walked into a class after school, he found the coach, helping another teacher work the kinks out of her back on the desk. He said excuse me and left, the coach caught up with him shortly and said you know you didn't see what you thought you saw.
To: Libloather
I can see how that might happen. ==========================================

Mann is a fighter and zealot...You forgot,
...and either a fraud or incompetent.
Real statisticians have proven it.
What is this, the Twilight Zone?

Mann said his trick, or ''trick of the trade,'' for the Nature chart was to combine data from tree-ring measurements, which record world temperatures from 1,000 years ago until 1960, with actual temperature readings for 1961 through 1998. He combined the two kinds of measurements, he said, because scientists have discovered that, for temperatures since 1960, tree rings have not been a reliable indicator. Recent pollution and other factors have distorted tree-ring widths and density, he said.
''The decline'' in Jones' e-mail refers not to a decline in temperatures, but to a decline in the scientific usefulness of tree rings that have formed in the last five decades, Mann said, noting his chart clearly identified where all his data came from.

Penn State scientist Michael E. Mann on Wednesday said his recently disclosed global warming e-mails show only that he's been pursuing fighting the facts and fighting pursuing sloppy science. He got his adverbs backwards.

Michael Mann says global warming e-mails are being taken out of context Out of context? Gee, just like your purported "original" data which you can't recover.
One commenter pointed out we even have daVinci's notebooks, Tycho Brahe's notebooks, Newton's notebooks, Darwin's notebooks...but not this data.
Even Tiger Woods' story is more plausible than this.
Or are you trying the O.J. Simpson defense?
"If the data don't fit, you must acquit."
Try again, you stupid pig-fornicator.
Cheers!

"And..the e-mails have allready been confirmed as genuine.."
I'm not saying the files were not "based" on genuine emails. But they are NOT email files - they are text files.
"so yes theyve been screened allready..."
By who? Has someone claimed responsibility for the so called "Hack" - and subsequent "screening"?
The number sequences in the files indicate 431,843,797 missing numbers between the first entry and the last. Even if the mail server were allocating files on a x100 basis - there are 431,843 other "files" in the archive system.
Who supposedly "selected" what has been released in the .zip file?
At least someone at East Angelina has a sense of humor - this was in the "documents section":

“Mann said he is open to skepticism on global warming. ‘’I've published papers that are considered skeptical,’’ he said. ‘’I have no problem with a paper that is skeptical. The problem here was that it was a sub-par-quality paper.’’”
This comes from the Hockey Stick Man! Oh my eyes!
In MannSpeak “skeptical” means even more alarmist than he is, sub-par means less alarmist than he is.

Im starting to think that these files were purposely leakedI thought that from the beginning. I hope this is not a pro global warming scam. I don't think that it is. I believe it is a form of whistle blowing. The left loves whistle blowers but they hate those who disagree. That is why these documents have been labeled as "hacked."
It makes sense that this whistle blower would redact the documents in such a way as to conceal the source.

Perhaps we should refer to this swindler as ‘Piltdown Mann’, in honour of another famous hoax (which, curiously, also originated in England).
