Maurice Clemmons, the 37-year-old Tacoma man being sought for questioning in the killing of four Lakewood police officers this morning, has a long criminal record punctuated by violence, erratic behavior and concerns about his mental health.
Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protestations of prosecutors.
"This is the day I've been dreading for a long time," Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas' Pulaski County said Sunday night when informed that Clemmons was being sought in connection to the killings.
Clemmons' criminal history includes at least five felony convictions in Arkansas and at least eight felony charges in Washington. The record also stands out for the number of times he has been released from custody despite questions about the danger he posed.
Clemmons had been in jail in Pierce County for the past several months on a pending charge of second-degree rape of a child.
He was released from custody just six days ago, even though he was wanted on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas and was staring at eight felony charges in all out of Washington state.

Ah yes... the old “commutation of mysterious providence”.
I think we have the makings of a new Monty Python skit, starring Huck. Something along the lines of ‘pining for the fjords,’ maybe.
What local paper is this and do they have a linkable story? We’re discussing the difference of 150k for child rape and this 280k for graffiti vandalism on another thread. Thanks.
I’m not following this right ,I guess,I’m not a big fan of Huck, but he let him out 9 years ago, right?
So, how many times has this guy been locked up since? Who let him out this last time, they say only a few days ago? What I’m trying to ask is how does Huckabee bear the brunt of this if this guy has been locked away numerous times since then? I’m not taking up for Huck, but someone else is more directly responsible, maybe?
Lots of development going on there, eh?
So on the way home Komo has an interview they did with this guy. He was apparently a manager at an apt building that burned down.
They played the interview, or a portion of it.
Amen. What a nightmare! That little guy doesn’t have a daddy any more.
Which Walmart? How did I miss that one?
The sentence "Huck" granted him clemency for was 60 years, for a 17 year-old, which may give a little indication of what the prosecutor and sentencing judge thought of this scum.
"Huck" granted this clemency over the objections of the prosecutor.
"Huck" deserves every bit of blame and condemnation he gets from this episode.
His craven, ass-covering "statement" is as bad as his original error.
Just another a$$hole politician. None of them really give a damn.
Lots of guilt to spread around. How many times do we see it..... again and again where somebody who SHOULD have been in jail was freed to do more damage? I’d prefer to see my tax dollars go to more prisons!
In this sort of case the fact that others also bear heavy responsibility for the grotesque failures of the judicial-penal system to keep this POS off the streets does not in any way lessen Huckabee’s responsibility. Sure, it looks like there were a bunch of other opportunities to protect society from this scumbag that were missed, but had the Huckster not commuted the 60 yr. sentence in 2000 then Clemmons would not now be on the streets.
Nine children total who lost a parent today.
CNN is saying he initially had a 95 year sentence??
Guys like him don’t know when to stop digging.
Kirby passed a few years back...
My heart feels so heavy. I don’t know any of them, but it’s still a kick in the gut.
I wasn’t aware that it was a 60 year sentence that Huck let him out of. That does make Huck a guilty player, for sure. Along with some more that have let this guy through the cracks.
Prayers for his family.
