'Oprah' exit may weaken daytime talk shows (Dinosaur Media DeathWatchâ„¢)

Oprah Winfrey's exit from daytime TV will mean more than just a studio scuffle for the time slot she mined for gold for TV stations. It also likely signals, many experts say, the beginning of an inexorable decline for the daytime syndicated talk show, which has occupied a central spot in mainstream culture ever since "The Phil Donahue Show" rolled out nationwide nearly 40 years ago.

But many observers say that the all-encompassing cultural role of "Oprah" is unlikely to be duplicated by another talk show on broadcast TV, thanks to the changes that have shaken society and the entertainment industry since Winfrey first started her talk show on a Chicago station in 1984. As cable continues to expand, broadcasters have entered an era of smaller audiences, diminished expectations and risk-averse decision-making. "Daytime TV as supplied by the networks is really all but dead," said Steve Farella, chief executive of the New York ad-buying firm TargetCast. Farella predicts that after Winfrey departs, her audience and advertisers gradually will scatter to cable, leaving scraps for other broadcast talk hosts.

"It's not because the talent isn't there," he added of daytime TV's predicament. "It's because the business isn't there anymore."

snip

TV stations, hit by sharp ad declines, are no longer able to fork over the hefty licensing fees that helped make Winfrey a billionaire. Viewers have gotten into the habit of grabbing news and video off the Internet, with less reliance on traditional broadcasters.

snip

"What TV stations are trying to do now is take less risk and somehow improve their margins," said Derek Baine, a TV analyst at SNL Kagan. "I don't know if they're going to pony up for a big license-fee type show like 'Oprah.' "

It was about the money. It was ALWAYS about the money. Oprah would have taken a great big pay cut if she had tried to negotiate a new contract.

The money just ain't there to float this stuff any more.

Between shows like hers, Jerry Springer, Maury, etc. and the few soap operas left, daytime tv stinks.

Goodbye Oprah...and while you're at it, can you take some of these others with you?

Oprah Winfrey has had a great and successful ride. In addition she is a smart business woman. So...fear not for Oprah. She is hosting the Obamas just before Christmas. She knows the viewership for the Obama appearance will be nothing to write home about. She doesn’t care one way or the other. She is a “lame duck” by her own choice, Methinks, Oprah has bigger fish to fry, and she is not going to let Barack and Michelle Obama screw it up for her. Why, in God’s name, do you think the Oprah hosted Sarah Palin just before the Palin tome published! Smart chick, that Oprah!!! Goes out with a clear slate, and....the world is her oyster!!!!

Hallelujah and Amen!

Daytime talk shows and soap operas are cesspools.

I have no doubt the networks will find suitable garbage to fill the sizeable vacuum Oprah will leave.

Daytime TV will suffer? Good. Maybe those who sit at home and watch Oprah after they’ve driven downtown to get their welfare check might need to find a new hobby. Like GETTING A JOB!

I heard him say that, too.

A whole network of crap?

Does the world really need two MSNBCs?

Yeah, but it will raise the collective IQ of television programming in general by a few points.

That is correct. She is launching the Oprah Winfrey Network - OWN.

http://www.oprah.com/article/pressroom/pressrelease/20090608-orig-OWN-Oprah-Winfrey-Network

The reason she is doing this is that syndicated TV just doesn’t have the money to carry her show, at least at the prices she used to get in fees.

.. plus .. with the demise of the local channels during daytime, what will become of all the ambulance chasing scum who ply their lechery on daytime TV? Oh, the horror.

Can you imagine it?

Oprah can control programming -- so inbetween hour long shows about legislation BHO/Oprah want passed in D.C., there will be alternating hours devoted to alternative health care via positive thinking and daily updates from the author of THE SECRET.

How utterly lame!

Oh, and wait... I forgot that she's giving Levi a weekend spot, LOL

I heard him say that, too. A whole network of crap?

Try .. just another network full of Lesbo crap like Lifetime Movie network. Maybe a few useless talk shows so that her boy 0bammie will have an outlet to the masses, but like Lifetime and the other Lesbo channels, no one will be watching.

Throw in a little new age nonsense like the books she's been hawking and you have a whole lotta dull.

I don’t know if her exit would weaken it, but it would certainly lighten it an awful lot.

yeah, OWN...the Oprah Winfrey Network

It’ll suck, but the acronym is cool. Maybe in a few years she can rename it the Obamas Washed-up Network ;-)
