Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine emerged from a closed-door meeting with his top economic advisers Monday, saying that to offset a projected budget shortfall next year, he may have to raise taxes -- a prospect quickly dismissed by Gov.-elect Robert F. McDonnell.
After meeting with his Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates, Mr. Kaine said he won't take anything off the table when it comes to fulfilling his responsibility to protect the state's AAA bond rating, providing Virginians with necessary services and keeping the state competitive to attract business.
The purpose of the meeting was to set revenue projections that will be used along with November's tax-collection tally to create the biennial budget for 2011-12. Mr. Kaine will present the budget to the General Assembly in December - a month before Mr. McDonnell takes office.

Cut the spending!
Dear Politicians: STOP SPENDING & CHANGE GOVT RETIREMENT.
There goes his next election. Sure, don’t tighten the belt just steal more money.
Perhaps he should consider cutting back on state employees, their salaries and possibly even their (gasp!) gold plated pensions.
The schmuck.
What next election? Kaine is a lame duck. Bob McDonnell won the office at the beginning of the month. You DO recall the Republican victories in Virginia and New Jersey, right?
This is political maneuvering. Democrats will try to blame budget woes on McDonnell.
Frigging Democrats never met a tax they didn’t like and it’s the first thing out of their fat mouths.
Corzine is doing the same thing in New Jersey on his way out the door.
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
What McDonnell should do is fire half of the state employees his first day in office. They're mostly 'rats anyway.
Fire 1 out of 3 state employees. Let the dust settle. Then start the real cutting.
“Fire 1 out of 3 state employees. Let the dust settle. Then start the real cutting.”
Amen, the public employee unions must be GUTTED. Especially the Teachers Unions, they are the most destructive force in America today.
I would wager that at least 10% of these “services” are NOT necessary.
And I'll raise that wager, that those who were hired to provide the 10% un-necessary services are related in some way to the politicians of Fairfax county.
The family “business” must go on ... taxes need to be raised.
Please define "necessary services".
Did you read the article?
Kaine, the Democrat and incumbent governor, is threatening higher taxes. Ineligible for re-election, he will leave office in January.
McDonnell, the Republican and governor-elect, is dismissing the idea. But he can't do anything about anything until January, when he takes office.
So, whose "next election" are you talking about?
I missed that. Thanks.
George Bush’s biggest mistake was not cleaning out Washington of every poisonous, treasonous rat entrenched in the bureaucracy of it all.
Sounds like a temper tantrum to me.
iceskater’s ‘favorite’ governor was in attendance at Mass Sunday at St. Peter’s. Outside, after the service, he was saying hello to anyone who would look at him. He shot me a smile but I just walked by, thinking that I should have stopped and asked him if any of the despicable attacks on Sarah Palin were originating at the DNC.
