NEW YORK Members of one of America's oldest Protestant churches officially apologized Friday for the first time for massacring and displacing Native Americans 400 years ago.
"We consumed your resources, dehumanized your people and disregarded your culture, along with your dreams, hopes and great love for this land," the Rev. Robert Chase told descendants from both sides. "With pain, we the Collegiate Church, remember our part in these events."
The minister spoke on Native American Heritage Day at a reconciliation ceremony of the Lenape tribe with the Collegiate Church, started in 1628 in then-New Amsterdam as the Reformed Dutch Church.
The rite was held in front of the Museum of the American Indian in lower Manhattan, where Dutch colonizers had built their fort near an Indian trail now called Broadway, near Wall Street.
The Collegiate Church was considered the "conscience" of the new colony, whose merchants quickly developed commerce with the world in fur and grains till then the turf of the natives.
Surrounded by Lenape Indians, the Dutch colonists "were hacking men, women and children to death," said Ronald Holloway, the chairman of the Sand Hill band of Lenapes, who lived here before Henry Hudson landed 400 years ago.

“Are they feeling guilty about what someone did 400 years ago”
I don’t think it has anything to do with guilt, I think it is rooted in conceit and vanity, they are saying... look, we are much better than those who killed.
If they looked around they might see their transgressions as well as injustices to be opposed, but to apologize for THEIR transgressions and stand against injustices being perpetrated NOW would be like hard, man.... they might even face persecution.
I love the way Diana Gabaldon handled this in her Outlander series when Claire thinks the British would have been kinder to the Indians had they won the Revolutionary war. Jamie reminds Claire of Culloden and the way the Scottish clans were wiped out by the English. It was the most non-PC thing I’ve read in ages concerning the Indians.
These people and their apologies. I saw the sense in it when the Pope apologized to the Jews, but this is just nonsense.
Beat me by thaaat much, I agree with you.
No.
Because of that little thing they called: Manifest Destiny assumption long before it was given a name.
It was all about land.
Hahaha. “You are a very bad man. Very bad!”.
Ever crack a book? It might help to learn something once in awhile.
*cough* Knew I shouldn’t attempt math before morning coffee. I stand corrected.
rofl *ping* .....hmmmmm
Hmmm - not like our 'civilized' European ancestors.
I had an English ancestor - a Knight, who was 'hung, drawn and quartered' (for his lands) - a common method of killing then.
That's how Wallace "Braveheart' died also.
It consisted of first hanging until almost dead, taken down while still conscience, slit open, guts piled on top and set afire - then cut into 4 pieces (quartered)...those that didn't get mounted on a spike at the city gates = the spike driven up through the nether region...and people were still being burned at the stake in England 400 years ago.
Yeah, the great civilized folk from the old world -
It's not a matter of ethnicity. Wherever man has been able to practice barbarity unfettered, it has been practiced.
Roger that.
been there, done that
Again, ever crack a book? It’s amazing what facts you can find there.
If what you posted is considered "learning" than I will blissfully remain ignorant.
I don’t think it’s the Indian tribes anymore. More like the forked-tongue tribes
I can't find anywhere where " because first American women were genetically flawed from there being no substitution for mothers milk and they nursed their babies for years, depleting their immune systems." ...........so point me in the right direction.
Well, now, a few - over the course of 70+ years - and studying researching and writing on the histories and peoples of Europe and the "New World" and it's peoples.
Mostly retired now, but I wrote on these subjects many times and I prided myself on cross checking sources and not just supposing, or going on assumptions. (Unlike you, assuming that I and other posters are illiterate, as apposed to yourself.)
Hey there Rowdy, not trying to speak out of turn but just wanted to let you know that simply nursing a baby for a couple of years doesn’t hurt a woman’s immunity. It’s been done pretty much since Adam and Eve. If a woman couldn’t nurse her own child, another woman did it (a wet nurse). If another woman wasn’t available, they turned to the milk of an animal (cow, goat, etc.).
Commercially made infant formula wasn’t available until around 1860 or so.
That’s ok, your reading is your choice, but there are many scientific treatise written on this very issue.
In fact, the first decimation of eastern ‘native’ Americans started in 1619. The Algonquins along were reduced from 30,000 to 300 and there were very few to welcome the pilgrims that landed in Mass. in 1620. They died from smallpox. And many of them died from syphilis and in fact knocked off a majority of the Europeans by the spread of syphilis to the Europeans.
From the 1500’s when the first Spanish explorers and their horses came to the US, the ‘native’ population was 12 million, and by the late 1800’s had been reduced to only a few hundred thousand by DISEASE!
But then you don’t get these statistics from your liberal public school teachers, it’s much easier to play blame games.
