The White House's unprecedented use of 'unprecedented'

The Obama White House is addicted to the “unprecedented.”

Perhaps it was a sign when President Barack Obama sat down in January to record his first weekly address and announced: “We begin this year and this administration in the midst of an unprecedented crisis that calls for unprecedented action."

(snip)

“Of course, Biblically there’s nothing new under the sun and most everything he’s done as president there is some precedent for somewhere,” he added. “What he does is variations on a theme.”

Still, Hess said, the word doesn’t have “great political currency.”

“I don’t think he gets special credit for being unprecedented, but he thinks that way,” he said. “I think that tells us more about him than really anything else about how he runs the White House.”

(snip)

But by applying the “unprecedented” label to a so many scenarios in government – from transparency to efforts to reduce the environmental impact of mountaintop coal mining – the Obama administration risks outsized expectations and overhype.

“It comes close to a certain arrogance,” Hughes said, “as if this president has done things that no other president has ever done before – except that they have done them before.”

Obama even treads on unprecedented territory in ways he’s not trying to highlight. At this point in his presidency he’s spent more time on the golf course, for instance, than his immediate predecessor. He’s also attended more fundraisers. And sometimes he surprises people with his use of the characterization, such as in Tokyo last week when he declared himself “America’s first Pacific President.”

Obama's unprecedented use of "unprecedented" will likely continue in his second year in office, when the administration is expected to tackle the unprecedented deficit.

It’s like Apple’s use of the word “revolutionary” when talking about their products. Overuse of a word dulls it’s effectiveness and cheapens it’s meaning.

Unprecedented use of the word “inherited” as well.

During the co-presidency there was much use of “unprecedented” also. They’d find some combination of stuff- like 13 consecutive quarters with no less than 5% variation in GDP growth- and declare “unprecedented economic opportunities”. If pressed on the point they’d ask, well, find another 13 quarters like these, if you can’t, there is no precedent!

So great, even the Donald’s farts smell like lavender. Unprecedented.

Unprecedented use of the word “inherited” as well.

It's "historic" to be this unprecedented

It shows how inexperienced he is. This like a rookie pitcher facing a slugger with 3 men on base thinking, "I don't think anyone has ever been under as much pressure as I am! This has got to be unprecendented!"

Nope. It's just part of the job.

Obama's unprecedented use of "unprecedented" will likely continue in his second year in office,

Hyperbole and being overwrought is probably a common trait of those who live in the fantasy world of the left. They think they're saving the world every time they open their mouths, but actually they're more likely destroying it step-by-step until they are stopped.

I heard a moron on the radio the other day refer to our present situation as the most difficult in American history.

Apparently he’s never heard of the WBTS, WWII or the Great Depression.

He also precedes his “tough” statements or declarations with:

“Make no mistake...”

WAY to often.

Unprecedented failure, well beyond the failure of Jimmy Carter. At least Jimmy was a “nice guy”, whereby Barry has unprecedented coolness to the point of being cold.

“At least Jimmy was a “nice guy”,”

I used to think that. The past eight years convinced me how wrong I was. The man is vile.

The other word to watch for is “consistent,” they use it all the time.
