Doctor's Help Sought in Failed Ohio Execution Try

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS November 24, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- As an Ohio execution team tried to find a vein during an unsuccessful lethal injection attempt, prison staff sought help from a doctor -- a move generally discouraged by ethical and professional medical rules -- federal court papers show.

Dr. Carmelita Bautista said in a deposition filed in U.S. District Court that she had never before been involved in an execution.

''No, because I am a doctor,'' she tells a lawyer questioning her. ''We are supposed to help people who are sick. We're supposed to heal people as such as we can.''

Bautista said she tried to insert an IV catheter into Romell Broom's foot during the execution attempt on Sept. 15 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. Gov. Ted Strickland postponed it after several hours because a useable vein could not be found.

The American Medical Association prohibits its members from participating in executions, including anything that would ''contribute to the ability of another individual to directly cause the death of the condemned.'' Dr. Rebecca Patchin, its board chairman, has said that being involved in capital punishment in any manner undermines a doctor's role as a healer.

That’s why they need to go back to the gallows-works every time. Hung by the neck until they die. No need to search for collapsed veins.

Most doctors do not belong to the AMA, so I assume this does not prohibit them from participating if they so wish.

Nice, but they can kill unborn children by the thousands every day for money.

* Not allowed to execute a filthy killer

* Allowed to kill an innocent, unborn child by pulling off its limbs, sucking its brains out, crushing its head with an instrument, or scalding it to death with saline, ALL OF THIS WITHOUT ANESTHETIC!!!!!

What a bunch of jackasses! God help us!!!!

The AMA’s capitulation to Obamacare and death panels highlights their hypocrisy on this issue. However, I do agree that physicians should not participate in executions. There are many other people who can put in an IV.

I heard a case like this prompted them to come up with a single shot that can be delivered in the muscle if they can’t find a vein.

I tend to agree with the AMA on this one. Unfortunately they need to rule the same way in cases of abortion for the sake of consistency.

These people aren’t worried about aborting innocent babies, but they are stressed to the max about some mass murderer.

Let me be of assistance, I will be more than happy to get that IV started.

I would expect then Rebecca that none of your members are abortion doctors? I will not call you doctor Rebecca but I will call you a hypocrite......

You're correct but I doubt many would wish to due to the Hippocratic Oath. They should bring back the hangmans noose.

"The AMA represents 17 percent to 19 percent of American physicians. [A] large percentage are either retired nonpracticing doctors, medical students, practicing academics, or they are in government policy positions," says Kathryn Serkes of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.

Doctors kill infnants all the time, so what is the problem. Besides, couldn’t the executioners find the jugular or perhaps the carotid artery? How dumb are they????
