WaPo Editorial: "Yes, She Can. Palin Has a Shot at the Presidency."
Washington Post ^ | November 24, 2009 | Mathew Dowd

The gap between Obama's approval rating among Democrats and among Republicans is nearly 70 percentage points -- a higher partisan divide than either Bill Clinton or George W. Bush experienced. Obama's agenda and actions this year, and some mistakes, have solidified this divide.

Polls show that Palin's favorability numbers are a mirror image of those of Obama. She is respected and loved by the Republican base, while Democrats despise her. Granted, independent voters have significant reservations about her capability to be president, and this would be a hurdle in the general election. But to win the Republican nomination, Palin needs only to get enough support from the base to win early key states. Already, in nearly every poll today, she has a level of support that makes her a viable primary candidate. Just look at the crowds and the buzz her book tour is drawing.

Like it or not, if Sarah Palin decides to seek our nation's highest office, she has a shot. The probability of her success depends on her ability, and that of President Obama, to admit and learn from their mistakes as we head into 2012.

A term I haven't seen used here in awhile is "broken glass Republicans" - how far one would crawl over broken glass to vote for a certain candidate. I'll never, ever vote for a Romney or a Huckabee no matter who is the running mate. I'll cast my usual protest vote instead. Governor Palin, however, is different. I would crawl through broken glass to cast my vote for her.

This was an article in the commentary of the WaPo, written by a former GWB campaign manager. It is not an editorial position of the WaPo.

this could evolve to where Obama like Clinton will morph into a moderate as folks find out more and more how radical he is

If Obama gets an opposition Republican House and Senate in 2010 and gridlock, he could well win reelection. Especially if he faces a Romney or a Huckabee in 2012 like Clinton faced Dole in 1996.

Romney and Huckabee and all the rest

These guys will be squashed like love bugs on a Florida windshield. There is nothing inside them.

Maybe not. But neither Romney or Huckabee or any other Republican who wants the nod will go down without a fight. And that fight will make the 2008 campaign look like a walk in the park.

I think the important thing is that WaPo is letting this out there. Why? Because many are starting to see the writing on the wall on want to be able to claim they were on the right side of history all along.

If Palin thinks the 2008 campaign was hard on her and her family, wait until she has to make it through the 2012 primaries. \

Are you lecturing Sarah Palin on the rough and tumble world of politics?

LOL!

I think she knows more on that subject than you.

The humor aspect of the advice struck me, as well. Now that the books is out and she’s gotten her gripes against the McCain advisors and Levi out of her system, she does have to let it go, at least publicly. But I’ve never once noted her without humor when on any other subjects.

Yet, I scratch my my head to recall even once instance of Obama’s self-deprecating humor. Was the line about not “looking like” presidents on the dollar bill supposed to be self-deprecating humor? I saw it as yet another way to challenge Obama’s perception of racism. Frankly, I think he is entirely too thin-skinned to be able to joke about himself or to have much tolerance for other’s joking at his expense.

To 22 - What's with you folks who don't believe we can do two things simultaneously?
Good luck convincing millions of Palin supporters to put her (hopefully 2012 candidacy) in abeyance. It's just not going to happen.
As for 2010, Mrs Palin herself will be playing a significant role in that.

Nah, I'll enjoy the Rs taking back one or both houses of Congress whist seeing Sarah Palin become the indisputable de facto leader of the entire Right.

We’ll see. Most of us who really do understand politics, are focused on 2010, which is the priority at this time.
